Doctor of Physical Therapy — 3 year graduate DPT program, DPT
The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) graduate program will prepare you to enter the field of practice as knowledgeable and skilled expert in the treatment of movement dysfunction.
This 3-year DPT graduate program is for students who have already earned a 4-year bachelor's degree.
- First year cadaver anatomy: 3-course series in cadaver anatomy taught by regions of the body across the entire first year of the program, and directly integrated with our courses in kinesiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics, and musculoskeletal physical therapy

The DPT program at DeSales accepts applications from qualified post-baccalaureate candidates with degrees from accredited institutions.
All of the following prerequisite requirements must be completed and submitted no later than June 30 prior to the start of the session to which the candidate has applied:
Submission of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, received in sealed envelopes or via electronic transfer, with evidence of completion of all required prerequisite courses.
Submission of completed Prerequisite Courseworkform. Recommended minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a recommended minimum 3.2 GPA in mathematics and science prerequisite courses at time of application. No grade below C and no more than one re-take on any prerequisite course will be accepted. Prerequisite coursework GPA will be calculated to include all occurrences, including retakes, of all required prerequisite courses.

Demonstrate understanding of and ability to meet all Technical Standards and Essential Functions required of physical therapy practice.
Complete 500 word cover letter/essay detailing interest in the field of physical therapy, and including a description of academic, employment and volunteer preparation and experiences to support the application.
Complete 40 hours of observation/volunteer/internship/employment hours in a single physical therapy facility. Additional observation hours in a variety of physical therapy practice settings is highly recommended, i.e., outpatient rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation, pediatrics, acute care/hospital, extended care facility, geriatrics, home health, sports medicine, etc. All completed Verification of Physical Therapy Clinical Observation Form(s) should be submitted directly to the DPT program by the licensed physical therapists that complete them and not submitted by the applicant.
Submission of a minimum of two Applicant Recommendation Forms, completed by non-relative, professional individuals, including, but not limited to, professors, employers, and coaches, and excluding the licensed physical therapist(s) with whom clinical observation was performed. All completed forms should be submitted directly to the DPT program by the individuals that complete them and not submitted by the applicant.
If selected for application review, qualified candidates must complete an on-campus interview with DPT program faculty for final determination of admission.
All international applicants from a country where the official language is other than English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and present documentation of scores with the minimum requirement of 104 for the Internet-based test. The program curriculum includes a foundation in basic science, followed by clinical and physical therapy science built around the body’s physiological systems.
- Students will use the University’s gross anatomy laboratory, with dissection creating a deeper foundational knowledge of the human body.
- Each student will participate in a research project with a faculty mentor, including a literature review, project design, data collection and data analysis.
- The program has 36 weeks of clinical education experience distributed across four courses.

DeSales University offers graduate students the opportunity to defer payment of their tuition when they will be receiving reimbursement from their employer or when they are eligible to receive financial aid. A copy of your employer's tuition reimbursement policy must be forwarded to the Treasurer's Office and/or all necessary financial aid paperwork must be filed with the Financial Aid Office before tuition deferment is granted.
Tuition deferment is a privilege given to graduate students at DeSales and can be revoked if this privilege is abused. Please note that you, as the student, are responsible for payment of your tuition balance in the event that your financial aid/loans or employer reimbursement is not received by the Treasurer's Office.
When a student is eligible for tuition reimbursement from his/her employer, written evidence of eligibility is required. The student is responsible for requesting this reimbursement from his/her employer. In cases where reimbursement is contingent upon successful completion of the course(s) and the student either withdraws or does not achieve a grade sufficient to warrant maximum reimbursement, the student is ultimately responsible for payment for the course(s).
Refund on Withdrawal
A refund of tuition payments will be made to a student who withdraws from a course. In all cases, credits will be calculated from the date the student completed the official withdrawal form, and the rebate will be based on the schedule shown listed below.
Refunds apply to tuition only. If a student is allowed to enroll by use of the deferred payment procedure, any funds due the University are immediately due and payable upon withdrawal.
Withdrawal during the add/drop period is 100% of tuition refunded. The schedule below is for withdrawal after the first class after the close of the add/drop period.
Withdrawal after 1st class: 80% of tuition refunded
Withdrawal after 2nd class: 65% of tuition refunded
Withdrawal after 3rd class: 50% of tuition refunded
Withdrawal after 4th class: 25% of tuition refunded
Withdrawal after 5th class: No refund

DPT Program Outcomes:
In addition to university graduate learning outcomes and DPT program goals, the following outcomes measures will be annually assessed for progress toward established thresholds.
- Graduation Rate is defined by CAPTE as the percentage of students who were matriculated in the first course in the professional program after the drop/add period and who completed the program. The national average as reported by CAPTE for 2017 was 97.2%. Our program is establishing a threshold of 95%.
- Employment Rate is defined by CAPTE as the percentage of graduates who sought employment and were employed (full-time or part-time) as physical therapists within one year of graduation. The national average as reported by CAPTE for 2017 was 99%. Our program is establishing a threshold of 100%.
- National Physical Therapy Examination Pass Rate is defined in two ways: (1) first-time pass rate as compared with the national average and (2) ultimate pass rate within a program. The 5-year national average for first-time pass rate as reported by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy is 91.6%. Our program is establishing a first-time pass rate threshold of 95% and an ultimate pass rate threshold of 100%.
The planned class size for the DPT program is one cohort of 28 qualified students each year. These students are selected from a pool of approximately 150 applicants. Application information for our admitted cohorts is as follows:
