Summer Dance Intensive
The Summer Dance Intensive offers professional dance training to students ages 14 and up. The intensive program focuses on technical training in ballet, modern, and jazz, with additional classes offered in African dance, Hip-Hop, Improvisation, Pilates, and yoga. Students will also learn repertory work created by the faculty. The two-week program will culminate in an informal presentation on Friday, August 3.

Students with a high school graduation date of 2020 or prior with at least three years of dance training may register under DA 301 and receive 3 credits from DeSales University. Qualified students must participate in the full two-week intensive.
Students have the option to live on campus during the Intensive. The Residential Option includes additional evening and weekend activities. Students are supervised by Residential Counselors, who live in the residence hall with the students throughout the intensive program.
Requirements for Enrollment
This is an intermediate/advanced dance training program for students entering high school and above. There are no exceptions to the minimum age of 14 - students must be 14 by the start date of the intensive. Interested students must have some previous dance training.
Students interested in taking the pointe elective must have at least two years of training en pointe, or may take the class in flat ballet slippers.

Come and spend one or two weeks on the beautiful campus of DeSales University immersing yourself in dance with the faculty of the Dance Department and other esteemed guest artists. You’ll leave enriched, inspired, and renewed after experiencing a wide array of classes and styles, as well as working with faculty on repertory work. We hope to see you in our studios this summer!

SDI Refund PolicyStudents who withdraw before July 1, 2018 will receive a full refund less the $25 application fee.
Students who withdraw between July 2 and July 20, 2018 will receive a refund less $100 tuition deposit and the $25 application fee.
NO MONEY will be refunded FOR ANY REASON after July 20, 2018.

A limited number of scholarships are available for exceptional students. Scholarships are only available to those students who will be enrolled in the two-week Intensive, but students do not have to be enrolled before submitting a scholarship application. Awards will be given as a percentage off of tuition but do not include room and board fees. Persons interested in applying for a scholarship must contact director Angela Sigley Grossman for information on submitting a video audition.
No scholarship video auditions will be considered after June 1, 2018.
Zakiya L. Cornish (Afro-Mix), a New Orleans native currently residing in Philadelphia, received her B.A. from Dillard University in Business Management. A classically trained West African dancer, Zakiya was a New Orleans-based independent artist for several years performing with many of the noted companies. Zakiya served as a teaching artist for 5 years with Young Audiences of Louisiana, culminating in an invitation for her students to perform in Los Angeles for Adam Shankman (executive producer of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE). Zakiya earned an MFA degree in Dance from Temple University. Her graduate research entailed an exploration of the intersections of African American identity and West African Dance. Zakiya currently performs with Kulu Mele African Drum and Dance Company and Lela Aisha Jones |FLyGround. Through her connection with these companies, she has recently had the opportunity to work with Tony-award nominee Jeffrey Page, and Ron Brown of Evidence Dance Company. Zakiya has taught traditional and contemporary African dance classes across the country. Her work focuses on traditional and contemporary dance and music of the African Diaspora.
Katie Donnelly (Pilates) has been drawn to movement since she was born. She came to Pilates in 2005 to find relief from the chronic injuries that plague dancers and to combat the hours of sitting she did while working towards her physics degree. After 7 years, 2000+ hours of practice, and “strong nudging” from her teachers, Katie finally entered The Fletcher Pilates® Comprehensive Program in November of 2012. She completed the program in September of 2013 and is recognized as a Qualified Fletcher Pilates® Teacher. Katie is also a member of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and is recognized as a PMA-Certified Pilates Teacher (PMA®-CPT). Katie holds a B.S. in Physics, M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, and is currently working towards her M.S. in Kinesiology. By day, she teaches physics at Emmaus High School, where she never misses an opportunity to discuss practical movement applications with her students. After recently becoming a mom, Katie’s passion has shifted to pre- and postnatal Pilates. The Method helped her avoid the common physical ailments that accompany pregnancy and recovery, and she’s enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge with moms new and old!
Karen A. Fuhrman (Inversions) has her MA from NYU in education/choreography and specializes in both ground and aerial dance. She has toured extensively with Pilobolus though-out the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, was featured on the 2007 Oscars, Ellen Degeneres, Good Morning America, twice on the Conan O’ Brian show and numerous national commercials. Other credits include Cavalia of Cirque du Soleil, Danny Ezralow’s “Love and Other Drugs,” two Victoria Secrets Christmas Spectacular shows, De La Guarda, and MOMIX. She has also danced for the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, MTV, PBS, ABC, NBC, and SHOWTIME. She has toured and taught aerial and dance in extensive venues throughout the world.
Angela Sigley Grossman (Improvisation, Composition), Director of SDI, is an Associate Professor of Dance at DeSales University. She holds an MFA degree in dance performance and choreography from Temple University and a BA degree in dance from DeSales University. Angela has presented choreographic work at Temple University, St. Gregory's University, Bucknell University, Moravian College, DeSales University, the American College Dance Association, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and the Baltimore Dance Invitational. She is on the Board of Directors for the Arts Academy Elementary Charter School in Allentown and has also designed lighting for dance performances in the Philadelphia area. Previously, Angela taught at Temple University.
Beau Hancock (Modern Technique) earned his MFA in Dance from Temple University, where he was a University Fellow and Rose Vernick Choreographic Achievement Award recipient. He also has a BA in Dance and American Studies from the University of Kansas. In 2009, he won the Cleveland Art Prize/Kathryn Karipides Scholarship, a national prize for summer dance study. In 2012-2013, he was a nEW Festival Artist-in-Residence, a Dance USA/Philadelphia Polish Exchange Artist, a PEW Fellowship Nominee, and a “Rocky” Award Recipient. Most recently, he was a recipient of the Ellen Forman Memorial Award from Drexel University and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Project Stream Grant. As a performer, Beau has had the pleasure to work with Ben Munisteri Dance Projects, Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company, Douglas Dunn and Dancers, Merian Soto/Performance Practice, Nichole Canuso Dance Company, Bronwen MacArthur Dance Project, Kun-Yang Lin and Dancers, Subcircle, and Miro Dance Theatre. He is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Stockton University.
Vince Johnson (Hip Hop) is a Philadelphia based artist with a BA from Villanova University in Continental Philosophy and Africana Studies. His movement foundations are martial arts and hip hop dance. He was a principle dancer for Rennie Harris Puremovement. Since RHPM, he has collaborated with numerous artists of various disciplines.
Zachary Kapeluck (Modern Technique) hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received his early training at Southwest Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. He received training at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, The Juilliard School, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Summer Intensive, and in the summer of 2011 he worked as a guest artist with Mary Miller Dance in Pittsburgh in the project titled Confluence. He graduated with a BFA in Dance from Point Park University, where he had the opportunity to perform works by choreographers such as George Balanchine, Gerald Arpino, Toru Shimazaki, Kevin Iega Jeff, Val Caniparoli, Jessica Lang, and Alejandro Cerrudo. He received training there from Doug Bentz, Kiesha Lalama, Garfield Lemonius, and Dana Arey. Zachary joined BalletX in 2013.
Julia Mayo (Ballet Technique, Pointe/Variations, Yoga, Repertory) is a native of Louisiana where she performed with the Baton Rouge Ballet Theater under the direction of Molly Buchmann and Sharon Mathews. Julia continued her dance training in New York City and holds a BFA in dance from the Juilliard School under the direction of Lawrence Rhodes, and an MFA in dance performance and choreography from New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts. Julia has worked directly with choreographers Eliot Feld, Aszure Barton, Seán Curran and Jacquelyn Buglisi and has performed repertory by Paul Taylor, Mark Morris and Antony Tudor. Julia was a member of Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance in NYC and has performed nationally and internationally with various companies. Her choreography has been produced by the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre, DeSales University, Lafayette College, University of Buffalo, University of Wyoming, Western Wyoming Community College, as well as festivals around the country. Julia is also a yoga instructor and holds a 200 hour yoga certification through Mind Body Dancer®.
Rebecca Moyer (Modern Technique, Stretch and Strengthening, Repertory) has a B.A. in Dance and a B.A. in Business Management from DeSales University and a M.F.A. in Dance Choreography from State University of New York-Purchase College. She has studied at various institutions, such as the Dance Theatre of Pennsylvania, Governor's School for the Arts, Philadanco, Point Park Summer Intensive, University of the Arts, Koresh School of Dance, Alvin Ailey School, Peridance, among many others. Rebecca has performed with Annex Dance Company, ContempraDance Theatre, ACTion Dance Touring Company, as a guest with the DanceGing Company in Allentown, and Penn State Abington Dance Company. Rebecca has choreographed for the Marywood University Dance Ensemble, DeSales University Dance Ensemble, Penn State Dance Company, Xtensions Dance Company, ACTion Dance Touring Company, Moravian College Dance Company, InMotion Dance Company and her works have been seen in various venues across the Pennsylvania and New York area, such as the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Philadelphia Dance Fest, American College Dance Festivals and Gallery B in New York City. Rebecca has also had the opportunity to teach at various dance programs and dance studios in the Philadelphia and New York area, and is currently teaching at Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts. Rebecca is also the co-director of Vada Dance Collective, a modern dance company based in the Philadelphia area.
Kristin Ranke-Brown (Musical Theatre Jazz) was born and raised in New Jersey and has been studying dance since the age of 3. From a very early age she knew that performing was ultimately what she wanted to do. With the help and support of her family, Kristin was able to study many genres of dance to really hone in on her skills. Her love of dance brought her to study at DeSales University, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance with a minor in management. Kristin has had the opportunity to perform works by Trinette Singleton, Charles Weidman (restaged by Janet Towner), Sydney Skybetter (Skybetter and Associates) Alwin Nikolais (restaged by Alberto Del Saz), Rennie Harris (Rennie Harris Puremovement), Caroline Copeland, and Kristin Fieseler (Annex Dance Company). Kristin’s training has giving her the opportunity to work and perform in New York City. Kristin studied closely with Sheila Barker, Ginger Cox, Finis Jhung, Jamie Salmon, and Tracie Stanfield. She was an assistant for the Radio City Rockette Experience and performed Tensile Involvement as part of “Sharing the Legacy” at Hunter College in NYC in honor of Alwin Nikolais. Some of Kristin’s favorite theatre credits include Camelot(asst. choreographer), Guys and Dolls (Ensemble-Hot Box Girl), You Can’t Take it With You (choreographer), and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Ensemble- Pearl Lady.) Kristin has had the opportunity to travel the world performing on Holland America Cruise Lines. Upon her return she had the pleasure of working with Director Paul Chau and choreographer Wendy Seyb on her first SAG film, “Life of an Actress.” Following that adventure she moved across the country to Las Vegas to perform in Donn Arden’s Jubilee! at Bally’s Hotel. While in Las Vegas Kristin had the opportunity to be a model for the Paul Mitchell “Caper” Beauty Fashion Show and JVA Inc. After returning to New York City the opportunity presented itself to work with the Make Up For Ever Academy as a body art model, a performer for Tryon Entertainment, and began performing in her first Off Broadway show, “Linda Miller’s Legendary Ladies of Music” at The Triad Theatre. Kristin currently resides in the Lehigh Valley with her husband and is pursuing her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Specialization in Dance Movement Therapy at Lesley University.
Tara Madsen Robbins (Modern Technique) earned her MFA in Performance & Choreography from Smith College, and her BA from Slippery Rock University. She performed/toured with modern dance company Tania Isaac Dance. As a freelance choreographer, Tara has presented her original choreography internationally throughout Spain, Guatemala, Italy, Greece, and Scotland where her work received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Tara has been invited as a guest artist to colleges, universities, performing arts high schools, conventions, dance camps, conferences, festivals, conservatories, as well as many private studios along the east coast. She taught at DeSales University from 2006-2016. Tara is currently on faculty at Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Delaware.
Trinette Singleton (Ballet, Pointe/Variations) began her professional career with New York's Joffrey Ballet in 1965. With them, she toured throughout the U.S, Canada, Mexico and Europe, performing in ballets by notable choreographers such as Joffrey, Arpino, Ashton, Balanchine, Cranko, DeMille, Jooss, Tharp, and Tudor. She has performed at the White House for two US Presidents. She appeared on Broadway with The Joffrey as part of Nureyev and Friends, Tribute to Diaghelev. She was thrust into national prominence in 1967, appearing in the multi-media ballet, Astarte, created on her by Robert Joffrey. Following her performing years, she was Administrative Assistant to Robert Joffrey and Ballet Mistress for the company, 1979 – 1984. After the birth of her daughter in 1984, she joined the faculty of The Joffrey Ballet School, NYC, teaching until 2004. In 2002, she restaged Astarte for The Joffrey Ballet Company in Chicago and in 2008, she appeared as a Guest Artist in the Joffrey Ballet Company’s Tudor Centennial, in Chicago. She can be seen in the 2012 documentary, The Joffrey Ballet: Mavericks of American Dance. Some of her other activities have included residencies at Florida State University, Bucknell University and Washington University. She has adjudicated for several American College Dance Festivals. In 2010, she won the “Outstanding Choreographer Award” in the semi-finals of the Youth America Grand Prix. She was a judge for the 2014 Cecchetti International Ballet Competition. She has choreographed for numerous organizations. Currently, Trinette is on the faculty at DeSales University, Center Valley, PA and is Co-Artistic Director of Repertory Dance Theatre, Allentown, PA. She is on the faculty of The Joffrey Texas Workshop. Trinette serves on the Advisory Board for Cecchetti USA, is an Honorary Member of Cecchetti International-Classical Ballet and is on the Board of Directors for the Gerald Arpino Foundation. Trinette holds her Licentiate, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance, London, England, and her Doctor of Fine Arts, Honoris Causa, DeSales University.
Jessica C. Warchal-King (Ballet Technique, Pilates) is a dance artist, educator, and advocate. She performed internationally, nationally, and regionally with Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers (KYL/D) from 2010-2017 and with Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet from 2009-2016. She has danced for many independent choreographers and organizations, and has had her choreography commissioned and presented, throughout the Mid-Atlantic United States. Jessica is Co-founder and Curator of KYL/D's InHale Performance Series, KYL/D's community liaison, and director of JCWK Dance Lab. She is on faculty at Widener University and Alvernia University; she has also taught at many universities and conservatories. Jessica received the Part Time Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence from Widener and a Rocky Award from the Philly Dance Community in 2016. Jennifer Dite Weaver (Jazz, Tap) holds an M.F.A. in Dance from Temple University and a BA in Theater and Dance from Muhlenberg College. She has performed with Sesame Street Live, Eidolon Arts, NYC Broadway Cheerleaders, The Muhlenberg Jazztap Ensemble, The Princeton Opera, The Pennington Players, Co-Art Dance Company and the Muhlenberg Theatre Association. Her TV/film credits include He Said, She Said with Talk TV International, Marci X with Paramount Pictures, and commercials with Adidas, Bell Atlantic, and Time Warner. She has choreographed Bye Bye Birdie and The Wizard of Oz for Ohev Shalom, Candide for The Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre, and Jack and The Beanstalk for Playful Productions. Her teaching experience includes adjunct dance faculty at Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Temple University, and Mercer County Community College. She is a member of Actor’s Equity and is presently full time dance faculty at The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts.
Marla Wolfinger (Dance on Camera, Dance Photo Shoot) is a recent graduate of DeSales University where she earned her B.A. in Dance. While at DeSales University, Marla found her passion for cameras. She participated in the annual 48 Hour Screendance Challenge where she received “Best Choreography” two years in a row and winning the contest with her film “Tabloid” in 2015. “Tabloid” has since been screened at the Screendance Association Holiday Party, Reading Film Festival (winning “Best Student Music Video”), and the Hobnobben Film Festival. This challenge sparked Marla’s interest in dance film and helped her combine all her favorite mediums, performance, choreography, and photography. In 2014 Marla decided to create her own photography company, Behind the Smile Photography. Throughout the past couple of years, Marla’s pictures have been published in West 42nd Hell’s Kitchen Magazine, as well as Bloch’s Dance Wear Facebook page. She has taken countless rehearsal photos of DeSales University’s fall and springs shows as well as participated in a workshop curated by Jamey Hampton (founder of BodyVox). After graduating, Marla spent time interning with of bones || hollye bynum, a modern dance/dance film company based in Brooklyn, New York. Recently, Marla has worked with the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, Philadelphia Youth Dance Festival, Delaware Valley Dance Academy, Cab Calloway School of the Arts, JOVO Dance Productions and DeSales University Touring Company.
