Why You Should Plan to Go to CONNECTIONS: Career/Internship Fair

by Jennifer Bard, Graduate Assistant to the Career Development Center Oct 24, 2022

The CONNECTIONS: Career/Internship Fair is back! We have a great list of local and national companies that want to meet and hire DeSales Students like you for internships, part-time and full-time work. You can check out the list of employers here. Simply select the tab labeled “All Employers” and you should find the full list!

Whether you are searching for an internship, job or just want to see what your options are, this fair is a great opportunity for students to introduce themselves and meet professionals in the industry. This fair is open to ALL students and ALL majors and will be hosted in the DUC from 2:00 pm-4:00 p.m. on November 2nd.

Here are 3 reasons you should consider attending

  1. This is an opportunity to introduce yourself and network with companies and professionals.
  2. Use the experience of attending the fair to build confidence in yourself and market your experiences and education.
  3. This would allow you to expand your knowledge about opportunities and positions at companies.

Here are 3 ways you can prepare for the fair:

  1. Do your research! Be sure to look up all of the companies attending and be prepared to ask thoughtful questions.
  2. Prepare your “Power Pitch” (aka Elevator Pitch) so you are confident when approaching tables. Want more information on how to prepare your Power Pitch? Check out our blog post here - Turn Your Elevator Pitch Into A POWER Pitch
  3. Make sure your resume is up to date and professional. Visit the Career Development Center with any questions prior! Our drop-in hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm in Dooling Hall 121.

Here are 3 goals to reach during the fair

  1. Use your time wisely and practice your Power Pitch with at least 3 professionals.
  2. Ask employers for their business cards to follow up with them and if you can connect with them later on LinkedIn.
  3. Speak with at least 2 employers you wouldn’t assume would have openings for someone in your major. For instance, if you’re a computer science major, consider going to a healthcare networks table. You never know if they’re looking to hire for an entry level computer science position!

Here are 3 tips for after the fair

  1. Apply for positions you discovered at the fair! If you need assistance with the application process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Career Development Center. We’d be happy to help in any way we can.
  2. Send thank you emails to any employer you spoke with. Remember to send them within 24-48 business hours.
  3. Send those LinkedIn connection requests. An example would be as follows, “Hello! It was so good to meet you at DeSales University’s Career Fair on November 2nd. I really enjoyed learning about your company’s culture and would love to connect with you!” Make sure to tailor it to the specific employer you interacted with.
