Fleming Institute Ethics Bowl Competitions

by Valerie Wolfenden | Oct 24, 2013

On March 21, 2013, the Fleming Institute for Business Ethics hosted the fourth annual Fleming Ethics Bowl Competition at DeSales University. Eleven teams from four LVAIC colleges and Penn State Lehigh Valley competed.

Prior to the competition date, the teams receive a case study detailing an workplace scenario with a challenging set of ethical questions.  The 2013 topic focused on fracking for natural gas and the ethical implications based on the principles of deontology and utilitarianism.  Team members demonstrated their working knowledge of business ethics and even created a mockup company so their officers could respond on the controversial topic.

Ethics bowl teams are generally compiled with two to five team members who are undergraduate, continuing adult, or graduate students.  Their presentations were judged by a panel of prestigious Lehigh Valley executives and government officials who served as consultants and mediators.

The judges panel evaluated team presentations leading to the final runner-up rounds and the event concluded with the award announcements.  The first through third place winners received public recognition as well as a monetary award.  The Division of Business was honored to have one of the three DeSales teams place first, Muhlenberg College placed second, and Moravian College placed third.

The 2014 Ethics Bowl Competition will be held Thursday, March 27, in the DeSales University Center on the DeSales University campus.  For more information, visit www.desales.edu/ethicsbowl.
