Amy Diehl, secretary in the DeSales University division of performing arts, and Kate Ferris, database coordinator in the enrollment management office, have been named Employees of the Year for 2011. Diehl received the 2011 Support Staff Employee of the Year award. Ferris received the 2011 Professional Staff Employee of the Year award.
Diehl and Ferris were recognized for their years of service and contributions to the University's success during the Service Excellence Dinner held on the DeSales campus on Tuesday, April 12.
The Employee of the Year awards are given annually to a professional and a support staff member in recognition of outstanding service. Recipients are distinguished for their commitment to the University's mission, witness to the values for which the University stands, and service marked by such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude, and creativity in the work place.
Support Staff Employee of the Year
Amy Diehl is a lifelong resident of Coopersburg, Pa. She graduated from Southern Lehigh High School, where she met her husband of 32 years, Scott.
Amy graduated from Lehigh County Community College with a business degree, and she began her tenure at DeSales University working in the treasurer’s office alongside her mother—and former employee of the year—Joan Stauffer. After 11 years in that office, Amy decided a change would be nice and applied for the position of secretary/business manager for performing arts. Because she loves and appreciates theatre and she was involved with her children in theatre, she thought it would be a perfect fit.
Amy is proudest of her son, Nathan, and daughter, Megan. Nathan is an elementary music teacher and the chair of the music department at Moravian Academy as well as the musical director and pit conductor for many musicals at DeSales. Megan is a graduate of the DeSales theatre department and is a costumer and stitcher at many theatres in the Philadelphia area. She was the very first recipient of the Freddy Award for Outstanding Student Achievement.
Amy enjoys spending her free time reading and crocheting. She also spends a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and baking. Her favorite pastimes and adventures involve going to the beach every summer and seeing Broadway shows in New York City.
Professional Staff Employee of the Year
Kate Ferris is a Pennsylvanian by birth and choice. She was educated in the Philadelphia Catholic elementary and high school systems and married her high school sweetheart, Jim. In 1978, Jim and Kate moved with their three children from Southampton Pa., to Spinnerstown Pa., in Bucks County.
While the children were young, Kate was employed part-time as an office assistant for a number of small businesses. In 1989, she was offered the position as department secretary in admissions at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales. Later she became administrative assistant to the dean of enrollment management. When the position of database coordinator was created in 1998, Kate moved from support staff to professional employee.
Away from the University, Kate spends her leisure time reading and following the exploits of her six grandchildren. Jim and Kate love to travel, and Smoky Mountain National Park in North Carolina is her favorite destination, but she will always remember their car trip to various parks in Alaska.
