A short film made by students and faculty at DeSales University recently took home the “Best Film from the Lehigh Valley” award at the 8th Annual Movies at the Mill International Film Festival at the State Theatre in Easton. And the film has another chance to win big this fall.

Lesters_Collection_PosterLester’s Collection has been accepted into the Grand OFF International Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland. The festival will be held from November 28 to December 4. “It’s nice because it's international. The films are from 42 different countries,” says Chuck Gloman, chair of the TV/Film department at DeSales. The film has also been entered into the Sundance Film Festival. Gloman will find out December 3 if it gets accepted.

Gloman wrote, produced, and edited Lester’s Collection. The film stars theatre major Nathan Borzillo as Lester, who collects women from the past three centuries. Alex, played by theatre major Alex Dubeck, returns from the future to stop Lester before the world ends. “I love working with students because they're so excited; they have better ways of doing things that I've never considered,” Gloman says.

Filming started back in March and wrapped up by the final day of class. The film was shot all around the DeSales campus with camera equipment that was loaned, evaluated, and then reviewed.

For Gloman, giving students real-world experience using the newest and best technology is a must. Recently, students were able to test out the ARRI ALEXA SXT and the ARRI ALEXA Mini, the same cameras that are used in big-budget Hollywood movies and TV shows. “I want the students to see what they're going to be using when they get in the industry,” Gloman says. “I want our students to get experience that no other school has.”

Lester’s Collection also stars theatre majors Brook Harrsch, Victoria Marchesani, Ally Borgstrom, Emma Santschi, Julianne Schaub, and Megan Abdo. The DeSales costume department designed the period costumes, under the leadership of Samantha Southard, costume shop manager, and Dennis Varley, associate professor in the humanities department, created and performed the original musical score.

Nick Lallo ’16 directed the film and Lin Budusky, TV/Film major, worked as assistant director. TV/Film majors Mason MacQuarrie (cinematographer), Allison McCausland (script supervisor), Kyle Cognetti (sound technician), Mike Healy (gaffer), and Richard Garrick ’16 (colorist) also contributed to the film, as well as Karen Ruggles, an instructor in the DeSales mathematics and computer science department, (rotoscope artist).
