Curtolo, Philip - Class of 2002

Phil Curtolo
Sales/Applications Representative
Software Consulting Services (SCS)
630 Selvaggio Drive
Nazareth, PA

Why I Do What I Do: I am a sales representative for a software company because it combines aspects of technology and business and because every day presents both a new opportunity and a new challenge.

Birth Place: Bethlehem, PA

Current Residence: Nazareth, PA

High School: Bangor Area High School

High School Accomplishments:

  • Received Josephine M. Farace Award for Journalistic Excellent in 1997

  • Editor of school newspaper, The Slater

Higher Education:

  • DeSales University, 2002

  • B.S. Management of Information Technology

  • Dual Major in Marketing

Higher Education Accomplishments:

  • Received Business Faculty Award for Excellence in Management of Information Tech-nology in 2002.

  • President and Director of Internet Operations for The DSU Chapter of the American Marketing Association.

Jobs Held in College:

  • Intern in the Information Technology Department at Just Born, Inc. in Bethlehem, PA (sophomore - senior years)

  • Assistant manager of video rental store (freshman year)

  • Student consultant at the DSU Computing Center (all four years)

Hobbies: Movies, computers, music, golf, baseball.

Favorite Music: All kinds, really ... rock, rap, jazz, classical, movie scores.

Sports Personalities: Any member of The New York Mets

Courses I Loved: Any and all marketing and MIT courses, with the exception of Communica-tions & Networking

Biggest Achievement: At DeSales, earning the Business Faculty Award at graduation; and at SCS, being the top-earning sales rep for two consecutive years.

Biggest Disappointment: Working as an intern at Just Born and not being offered a full-time position after graduation. I put my all into the job; but the market was what it was, and there were no positions available for me at the time.

Career Goals: I would eventually like to become an executive at a successful business and someday possibly own my own company.

Influential People:  My wife, Erin... my parents... Dr. McGorry and Dr. Lewis.

Favorite Quote: "Never allow yourself to be degraded by mediocrity. If you do, you will lose your dignity."

Biggest Challenge: Finding employment in the workplace in the competitive -- post-9/11 job market.

Best Advice Received: When Dr. Lewis told me that I should start looking for jobs outside of IT. When I graduated in 2002, the job market was extremely difficult and Dr. Lewis suggested that I take advantage of the fact that I had two degrees. I broadened my search and was hired at SCS shortly thereafter.

Toughest Obstacle I Overcame: Running on fumes for a full year ... A year before our wed-ding, my wife and I bought a house that needed a ton of work.  She was going to grad school; we were planning our wedding; and we had both just started our jobs. Looking back, I still don't know how we did it!

What I Liked Best About DeSales: Meeting great friends and the small classes.

What I Miss Most About DeSales: The unbelievable amount of free time I used to have, the good times at The Heights, and fried pierogies with butter and onions in the cafeteria.

What I Miss Least About DeSales: Campus police, of course.

Advice for Present DeSales Students: Take advantage of the fact that you are in such close proximity with your professors, regardless of your major. The small class sizes are such a huge asset. Also, see my favorite quote above and think of it the next time someone slacks off either at work or at school. Set your own goals and do whatever you need to do to achieve them and you will succeed!
