DeSales University Honors Vietnam War Veterans at Fifth Annual Commemorative Ceremony
DeSales University proudly hosted its fifth annual Vietnam War Commemoration Ceremony on Friday, March 27, 2026, bringing together Vietnam War veterans, active-duty service members, families, students, and members of the DeSales community to honor those who served during one of the most complex chapters in American military history.
As an official Commemorative Partner of the U.S. Department of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration program, DeSales University has earned national recognition as one of the program’s top-performing partners. This distinction reflects the University’s sustained commitment to acknowledging the service and sacrifices of Vietnam-era veterans and ensuring their stories are formally recognized, remembered, and shared with future generations.
Keynote speaker Richard Burton, a Vietnam War Army veteran who served in Airborne and Special Forces units, shared reflections of his service after his arrival in Vietnam in November 1969. Serving as a Psychological Operations (PSYOP) Specialist, Burton explained his role in developing and delivering targeted information intended to influence attitudes and behaviors of local populations in support of military objectives.
Burton spoke candidly about both the challenges and lasting impact of his service, noting that he considers himself fortunate to have returned home. In 2013, he founded a Vietnam Veterans Round Table group to provide fellow veterans with a space to share their experiences and be heard. “This is my way to give back, not only to those who served, but also to their family members,” Burton said. “When God gives you lemons, you make lemonade.” He closed his remarks with a moving reading of It Is the Soldier, a poem by Charles M. Province, prompting a standing ovation.
The program was emceed by Michael Ducey, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Science at DeSales University, and an Army National Guard veteran. Veterans in attendance were offered a heartfelt “Welcome Home” tribute on behalf of a grateful nation. In a separate recognition, each Vietnam-era veteran was called to the stage amid continuous applause and presented with a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin, a symbol of national appreciation.
The Spring 2026 Veterans and Military Scholarship was presented by Wendy Badman, director of the Veterans and Military Services Center, to Luis Alvarado, a United States Navy veteran and member of the Student Veterans of America DeSales Chapter. “At DeSales University, honoring those who served is not a once-a-year gesture, it is woven into everything we do,” said Badman. “This ceremony is a meaningful opportunity for our entire community to stand alongside Vietnam veterans, and ensure their stories are never forgotten.”
The event also featured a pop-up museum exhibit showcasing Vietnam War memorabilia and commemorative posters, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with history in a tangible and meaningful way.
Community partners participating in the ceremony included the Southern Lehigh High School Band; Fleet Reserve Association Black Diamond Branch #115; John Rivers Memorial VFW Post #11322; Egypt VFW Post #7293; Louis E. Dieruff High School Air Force JROTC; Student Veterans of America – DeSales Chapter; the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council; Military Order of the Purple Heart Post #190; and Tails of Honor.
Championing the core values of hospitality and gratitude, DeSales University advances its enduring commitment to honoring veterans and their families.
