DeSales University Nursing Chapter Earns National "Stellar School" Recognition

The DeSales University chapter of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) has been recognized as an NSNA Stellar School Chapter, a national honor awarded to nursing programs that demonstrate sustained engagement in professional development, student leadership, and shared governance.

The recognition will be formally acknowledged at the NSNA 74th Annual Convention in Houston, Texas, in April, when Kiersten K. Withrow, assistant professor of Nursing, Director of Accelerated BSN programs, and SNA Faculty Advisor, accepts the commemorative plaque and pins on behalf of the University.

The NSNA Stellar School Chapter Recognition Program, established in 2009–2010, honors official NSNA school chapters that continue active involvement in the national organization while supporting the professional growth of nursing students and faculty. The designation recognizes programs with a strong commitment to leadership, service learning, and participation in NSNA initiatives.

To be eligible, nursing programs must maintain official NSNA constituency status for at least five consecutive years. Chapters are evaluated through a point-based system across five categories: constituency status and state leadership participation; dean, director, and faculty support for student professional development; facilitation of student engagement in NSNA activities; involvement in NSNA programs and service learning; and active support of NSNA membership.

"This recognition reflects the genuine investment our nursing students make in their professional development, both inside and outside the classroom," said Withrow. "Guiding students toward active engagement in the nursing profession is central to what we do, and it is gratifying to see that commitment recognized on a national level."

Stellar School status places DeSales among a select group of nursing programs nationwide recognized for promoting professional engagement and leadership opportunities for students, highlighting the University's commitment to preparing future nurses through academic excellence and active involvement in the broader profession.

“This designation is a proud reflection of our students’ dedication and the strength of our nursing faculty and staff,” said Leo-Felix M. Jurado, Inaugural Dean and Professor of the College of Healthcare Professions at DeSales University. "At DeSales, we are committed to developing nurses who are not only clinically excellent but professionally engaged, and this honor affirms that we are fulfilling that mission."

Schools earning the distinction receive national recognition through NSNA publications and its website. The Stellar School designation is valid for five years and may be renewed through continued documentation of program involvement and achievement.

The National Student Nurses' Association represents tens of thousands of nursing students across the United States and promotes leadership development, advocacy, and professional standards for the next generation of nurses.
