DeSales University Awarded State Grant to Launch Accelerated PK–12 Special Education Certification Program

DeSales University has been awarded a $99,995 IDEA Part B subaward from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, Intermediate Unit 1, and PaTTAN to support the launch of an Accelerated Program for PK–12 Special Education Teacher Certification for the 2026–2027 academic year.

This competitive grant supports colleges and universities that partner with local school districts to prepare qualified special education teachers through an expedited postbaccalaureate pathway. The program is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and are seeking certification within an 18‑month timeframe.

The grant will enable DeSales to:

  • Develop and deliver an accelerated PK–12 special education certification program that includes required coursework, mentoring, field experiences, and a 12‑week student‑teaching placement.
  • Offer summer 2026 and summer 2027 coursework, with additional fall 2026 classes in Structured Literacy, IDEA compliance, and IEP development.
  • Expand summer field experiences and provide year‑round coaching in partnership with local school districts.
  • Ensure participants engage in PaTTAN‑sponsored professional development aligned with state certification competencies.
  • Build sustainable structures that support long‑term certification pathways in special education.

“Recognition from the state’s Department of Education affirms the strength of our teacher-education programs and the dedication of our accomplished faculty and staff,” said Dr. Terri Wignot, Ph.D., University provost. “Our in-class and field experiences combine academic rigor with rich experiences, ensuring our future teachers are highly qualified and uniquely prepared to serve generations of students.”

The funding period runs from March 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027, and will support program development, field experience coordination, and participant support services. Reimbursements will follow federal IDEA Part B guidelines.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to PaTTAN for its generous grant in support of DeSales University education students pursuing special education certification,” said Katrin L. Blamey, Ph.D., associate dean of the School of Education. “This funding plays a critical role in expanding access to high-quality preparation for future special educators and directly supports students as they meet Pennsylvania’s workforce needs.”

A PaTTAN educational consultant will work with DeSales throughout the grant period to support program implementation and monitor progress.”
