What are Micro-credentials?
Micro-credentials are short, focused learning experiences that let you show mastery of a specific skill or area of knowledge. When you complete one, you earn a digital badge—an online credential that includes verified details about what you learned, how you learned it, and who awarded it.
They’re intentionally flexible. You might earn one through a regular course, a workshop, or a training experience created by DeSales faculty or staff. Some micro-credentials can also be stacked, helping you build toward a certificate or even a degree.
How do I Earn Micro-credentials at DeSales?
Every micro-credential has a clear set of requirements. You’ll complete the courses or learning experiences listed for that badge and demonstrate what you’ve learned through defined assessments or outcomes.
Once you successfully meet the criteria, you receive a DeSales digital badge through Accredible, our official badging platform. From there, you can easily add it to LinkedIn, your résumé, or anywhere you want to showcase your skills.
Because micro-credentials vary widely, each badge has its own structure—some are tied to credit-bearing courses, while others come from workshops or specialized training. There’s no set time frame, modality, or contact-hour requirement; each badge is designed around what makes sense for the skills being taught and assessed.
Why is DeSales Offering Micro-credentials?
Micro-credentials give DeSales the flexibility to recognize learning that doesn’t always fit into a traditional degree program. They help us:
- respond quickly to emerging skill and training needs
- support local employers and partners with targeted learning
- add value to existing courses and programs
- provide credentials that are easy to share professionally
- create stackable milestones that keep learners motivated
- engage students and non-degree seekers in new ways
They also expand the ways you can grow academically or professionally—whether you’re building toward a bigger goal or adding a focused skill to your toolkit.
