Meet the Experts

don alway

Don Alway

Prior to entering the private sector, Don Alway was an FBI agent for 28 years, beginning his career in Los Angeles and later serving as assistant director for the Training Division, the WMD Division, and finally the Los Angeles Division, where he led the 1700 employees who make up FBI Los Angeles.

During his time with the FBI, he held leadership roles in Los Angeles, New York City, Cincinnati, and Jackson Offices. He was the interim FBI representative to Qatar as well as a deputy on-scene commander investigating the regime of the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein.

He is the recipient of the 2009 FBI Director’s Award for Excellence and the 2023 Presidential Rank Award. Prior to the FBI, he was a Deputy Sheriff for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is a board member for Summit ET and an adjunct faculty member for DeSales University. He is a volunteer firefighter and youth sports coach during his off hours.

Dane Carroll

Dane Carroll is the Deputy Chief of Police and Emergency Management Coordinator at the Upper Saucon Township Police Department. He has served as the commanding officer of the Criminal Investigations Division, detective and patrol officer, and has received police commendations for bravery, merit, unit citation and community service.


He is a member of the Lehigh County Incident Management Team, Northeast Counterterrorism Task Force Incident Support Team and drone pilot.  Dane is a volunteer for the Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, where he currently serves as the Assistant Director of Operations and an Incident Commander responsible for supervising statewide search and rescue, disaster relief and other missions tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College, and received decorations for exceptional service, meritorious service, incident commander of the year, and many others.

Dane has a Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and multiple certificates and certifications in related fields, including Digital Forensics, School Safety, Infrastructure Protection, Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and Emergency Management. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy, and has attended numerous other professional development programs throughout his career.  

derrick jacobus

Derrick Jacobus, MA

Derrick is a Senior Security Analyst at Penn Medicine with more than 22 years of experience spanning law enforcement, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and incident response. Throughout his career, he has specialized in complex criminal investigations, digital evidence analysis, cybercrime investigations, and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) cases, working collaboratively with local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Prior to transitioning into healthcare cybersecurity, Derrick served as a Senior Forensic Examiner at a county prosecutor’s office, where he led regional digital forensic examinations and investigations involving cyber-enabled crimes, digital evidence, and major criminal cases. From 2018 to 2023, he served on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Computer Analysis and Response Team (CART), supporting some of the nation's most sensitive and complex digital forensic investigations. His investigative work has been recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the United States Secret Service (USSS), and multiple county chiefs’ associations for outstanding contributions to criminal investigations and digital forensic examinations.

Derrick holds a Master of Public Administration degree and maintains several industry-recognized certifications in digital forensics, incident response, and cybersecurity, including multiple certifications from the SANS Institute. He has also served in committee and leadership roles within the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS), contributing to the advancement of digital forensic education, training, and professional standards.

In addition to his professional practice, Derrick serves as a graduate-level instructor, teaching courses in Digital Investigation and Evidence Collection, Forensic Acquisition and Analysis, and Network and Cloud Forensics. He is an active educator and national presenter who has delivered training and conference presentations on crimes against children investigations, digital evidence, incident response, and emerging Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) methodologies. His teaching philosophy emphasizes bridging theory and practice, providing students with real-world investigative and cybersecurity perspectives drawn from decades of operational experience.

Outside of his professional work, Derrick remains active in the hockey community as a player, coach, and board member of a youth hockey organization in New Jersey.

william smith

William Smith

 
Mr. Smith has 34 years of law enforcement experience combining municipal police, state, and federal service. Smith is currently a Special Agent with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Smith recently retired as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has conducted criminal investigations such as violent crime against children, gang and drug investigations, public corruption, and complex white collar crime investigations. He had led and managed the FBI Lehigh Valley Violent Gang Task Force, a unit consisting of local, state, and federal law enforcement combatting violent crime committed by gangs in the Lehigh Valley area. Smith had also conducted national security and cyber investigations against state-sponsored actors in the FBI New York and Philadelphia Divisions.
 
Smith has been a hostage/crisis negotiator since 1997 and has served on multiple emergency response teams throughout his career. Smith was responsible for responding to federal hostage/crisis incidents as well as supporting municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies during crisis incidents. During his FBI career, he had assisted with domestic and international kidnappings by criminal and terrorist organizations. Smith, who was a former Senior Team Leader of the FBI New York Field Office Crisis Negotiation Team and Senior Team Leader of the FBI Philadelphia Negotiator Team, was also an instructor to various law enforcement agencies on hostage/crisis negotiations FBI certification. He had assisted with crisis negotiation instruction at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia to international and domestic police officers as well as federal agents. He had also instructed crisis negotiation courses internationally and most recently attended the London Metropolitan/Scotland Yard Police Departments Crisis Negotiation Course. He is a member of the Delaware Valley Negotiator's Association and acts in an advisory role for regional negotiator teams.
 
Smith was a firearms instructor for the FBI responsible for qualifying agents on their weapons systems. He was also a firearms instructor at the FBI Academy instructing new agent training. 
 
Smith received his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Temple University and his Master's degree in Criminal Justice from St. Joseph's University. He received the U.S Attorney General’s Award for excellence in a national security investigation, the Director of National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation in recognition of exceptional service, U.S. Attorney’s Office award for outstanding investigation, and numerous FBI citations for outstanding investigations.
jeff tomlinson

Jeff Tomlinson

Prior to teaching at DeSales, Mr. Tomlinson was in law enforcement for over 35 years.  First as a local police office and he then spent over 20 years in the FBI.  While with the FBI, Mr. Tomlinson was assigned to various units to include investigating organized crime, international and domestic terrorism, and counterintelligence.  Mr. Tomlinson was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent of the Philadelphia Joint Terrorism Task Force shortly after the events of September 11, 2001.  Mr. Tomlinson spend the final two years of his career assigned to the FBI Director's Office at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.  Additionally, Mr. Tomlinson spent time overseas on investigative matters for the FBI.  Mr. Tomlinson currently serves as an instructor teaching course in criminal justice and homeland security.

Jacob Ware

Jacob is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service and at DeSales University. Jacob was previously a research fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and currently serves as a 2026 National Security and Counterterrorism Fellow with the McCain Institute as well as a Survivor Fellow at Everytown for Gun Safety. He is the co-author, with Bruce Hoffman, of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, published in 2024 by Columbia University Press and recipient of the Airey Neave Book Prize.
