Dr. Carol Gullo Mest is being honored for her work as a Health Care Hero.

Lehigh Valley Business has named Gullo Mest, professor of nursing and chair of the graduate nursing programs, a 2021 Health Care Heroes honoree in the Lifetime Achievement Hero category.

The multimedia news source’s editors selected the honorees based on impact, exemplary job performance, and service to the Lehigh Valley.

After being nominated, Gullo Mest had to write responses to several questions. She focused on two areas—the effect of her first position as a nurse practitioner (NP) serving the migrant health population, an experience that she says served as a guiding light in her personal nurse practitioner clinical practice. She also noted the contributions that DeSales has made to creating and increasing the nurse practitioner presence in the Lehigh Valley.

“When I started at DeSales, developing a Family NP program was a thought,” she says. “At the time, there were not a lot of NPs in the Lehigh Valley and no other school offered an NP track. I knew that most of our graduates would remain locally employed and that their performance in the clinical arena would be a direct reflection on the quality of our programs. I was committed to maintaining the reputation of our NP programs, but superseding reputation was my intention to prepare graduates who make the best clinical decisions affecting patient outcomes.”

Gullo Mest and her fellow honorees will be celebrated during an online event on June 1, as well as in a print and digital magazine.
