Faculty, staff, and students are taking a closer look at social activism through the lens of athletics.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted a virtual campus-wide discussion—Athlete Activism in the Era of Black Lives Matter—featuring Dr. Lauren Brown, associate professor of sport management, pictured above.

“Sports continue to provide this unique context in which we can explore and examine our society. When we’re talking about issues of racial justice, it’s not always easy. It is time for us to go there.”

Dr. Lauren Brown, associate professor of sport management

Brown touched on a number of topics, from the history of athlete activism and modern-day activists—including Tina Charles and Colin Kaepernick—to the problematic role of governing bodies, which have long sought to quash change. She encouraged members of the audience to educate themselves and find their voice.

“The fight is continuing,” she said. “Our Black athletes aren’t resting. We need to be careful to not put all of this on them. Sport affects all of us. Those of us who are engaged with the industry on a business level—what are we doing to support their efforts? They have the platform but they still need help with boots on the ground.”

Scott Blair, associate vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion, moderated the event. The Office of DEI recorded the hour-long event and the video will be available soon. The discussion was part of a lineup of events at DeSales honoring Black History Month.
