New Virtual Scholar Series Explores Artificial Intelligence
Dr. Brennan Pursell cut through the myths and misconceptions of artificial intelligence during the first installment of a new Virtual Scholar Series.
Pursell, the founder and current director of DeSales’ Applied AI program, explained what AI is, what it does, and how it works.
“There are so many myths about it,” he told the virtual audience. “At the end of the day, it’s just math.”
Pursell debunked several common myths, including that AI knows what it’s doing, means easy money, drives businesses, and will control your mind. He also broke down some ground rules, saying that data is the mother of AI, math is the father of AI, and that AI needs parenting.
“Embrace the cyborg,” he encouraged. “The tools can really help, especially in the white-collar professions, to augment human labor. Take the boring stuff, the repetitive stuff and automate it so that we can really solve problems.”
The Institutional Advancement Office is spearheading the Virtual Scholar Series as a way to highlight the research and work of faculty and staff. Upcoming presentations include Should You Patent That on March 26, Coronavirus and the Vaccine: What You Need to Know on April 26, and Radicalization Towards Terrorist and Violent Extremist Recruitment on May 13.
