Emily Jacobson calls it a complete surprise. She was watching the virtual conferral of degrees ceremony with her family when she heard her name called not once but twice.

At the end of the ceremony, Brother Daniel Wisniewski, OSFS, provost, presented Jacobson with the Provincial Medal of Honor, which is awarded to the graduate who best exemplifies the spirit of St. Francis de Sales.

“I was sitting with my family listing names of incredible student leaders who I thought deserved this award,” she says. “It means the world to me that I received this honor. I have learned the importance of St. Francis' teachings and have tried to uphold the Salesian traits in all that I do.”

The medical studies major is currently in DeSales’ Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program. She plans to become a pediatric hematology/oncology PA after graduating next year. But she’ll never forget the people who have had a profound impact on her during her time at DeSales.

“I am eternally grateful for the family DeSales has given me. Four years ago, I had no idea that I was about to embark on a journey with the kindest, most giving faculty, staff, students, and administrators. There is no other place in the world where you never have to open a door because someone is always holding it open or upperclassmen spend their whole day moving in first-year students with smiles on their faces.”
