Character U Staff Gears Up for Orientation with Camp Getaway
Mentors and captains in the Character U program are getting a lesson in leadership as they prepare for orientation and the new academic year.
For the third year in a row, the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership took mentors and captains on an overnight camping trip to Camp Canadensis in the Poconos.
“It’s a great opportunity for them to get away from the hustle and bustle, to get to know one another on a really personal level, and to bond. The staff has become a cohesive unit and this camp has been one of the biggest reasons why.”
The trip is designed to take students out of their comfort zone with activities ranging from canoeing and gymnastics to a rock wall and rope course. Students also listen to presentations and learn about upcoming events and service projects on campus.
“It teaches us to be comfortable with the uncomfortable,” says Maria Pawlowski ’20, a peer mentor whose favorite part is climbing over the rock wall. “By being off campus and in a new environment, we aren’t sure exactly what we are going into and that makes us connect closer.”
