  • Guiding Principles

At DeSales University, it is our priority to keep our students, faculty, staff, visitors, and their families healthy, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This guide is a culmination of the work of the DeSales COVID-19 Contingency Planning Task Force, which has adapted the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Planning Guide and Self Assessment tool - considered by many to be the exemplar baseline assessment, planning, and reporting tool for higher education. Other notable inputs to our planning process include pulls from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

This guide highlights the responsibilities of all stakeholders on campus including students, faculty, and staff and outlines the steps DeSales University is taking to address COVID-19. DeSales University will abide by governmental guidelines, to the extent applicable and feasible, as we strive to balance public health concerns with the needs of our University. This Return-to-Campus guide details how we plan to reopen our University and still keep our campus community safe to every extent possible.

The plan will only succeed with the support of each and every member of the DeSales University community students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The purpose of this guide is to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus to the furthest extent possible. This will require our persistent commitment to abide by the procedures and policies outlined below - including social distancing, wearing face masks/coverings, hand-washing hygiene, and much more.

  • Scope

While we will implement various protocols to ensure safety, it’s up to each individual on campus to execute on these protocols daily. By releasing this Return-to-Campus Guide, DeSales University hopes to clearly communicate our plans moving forward, highlight campus protocols in place to protect your safety, and establish a level of comfort for all of our students, employees, and visitors returning to campus.

All students, faculty, staff, and visitors are expected to fully comply with the policies, protocols, and guidelines outlined in this document and others as part of the DeSales University “Ready for Anything” commitment. Failure to comply could jeopardize the University’s ability to offer a full educational experience.

In an emergency, please call 911, or if you are on campus, 610 282-1002 or extension 1250. If you have non-emergency questions related to COVID-19 and DeSales University, please email those questions to covid19@desales.edu. You should receive a response within 24-48 hours. Please note that this email is not for emergency use.

  • Situation and Assumptions

In accordance with the Pennsylvania Governor’s phased approach to reopening the Commonwealth, DeSales University will thoughtfully welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus beginning with mission-critical personnel.

All students, faculty, and staff may resume on-campus activities and instruction no later than August 17, 2020, officially marking the start of the 2020 fall semester.

The CDC, PA DOH, OSHA, and other regulatory organizations are the authorities on COVID-19, and the University must implement the Pennsylvania Department of Health Worker Safety Order as well as other applicable governmental guidance and make decisions based upon applicable government requirements and available research and best practices.

In order to protect the University community, prevent infections, and mitigate any additional risks, the University reserves the right to implement symptom screenings (including self-screenings) before allowing anyone to return to campus. Should the University implement symptom screenings, they will be performed on a nondiscriminatory basis and the information gathered will only be shared with University officials who have a bona fide need to know. Results will be tracked separately from other personnel or student records and will be kept confidential in accordance with applicable laws.

Our knowledge and understanding of the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, and our policies and plans will be updated appropriately as more information becomes available.

  • Mask & Visitor Policies and Self-Screenings

French Bulldog with Mask - DeSales University

Each day, before returning to campus or attending class, students, faculty, and staff must complete screening via HealthChampion, a COVID-19 self-screening, available via smart phone application or computer. Additional details regarding this program are forthcoming.

    • Upon completing the screening process, students, faculty, and staff should expect several procedural changes to accommodate University operations in the “new normal” COVID-19 environment. Notably, everyone will be required to maintain social distancing, which is defined by the CDC as being within six feet of another person fora prolonged period of time; wear face masks/coverings; self monitor for symptoms and adhere to the visitor policy, as prescribed below. Please note, these policies as they pertain to athletics, dining, the fitness centers, living in residence halls, and some other aspects of campus life may vary depending on the circumstances.
    • Face Mask/Covering Policy: Consistent with CDC recommendations and PA DOH regulations, DeSales University requires everyone on campus to wear a face mask/covering. Note: Employees may remove face masks/coverings in individual offices at times when contact with others is not suspected or likely, provided a face mask/covering is available to wear if the situation changes. When the employee leaves their individual office, or has invited a colleague into their office, they must wear a mask.
    • Students, faculty, staff, and visitors without a face mask/covering will be provided one upon request. However, students, faculty, staff, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own face mask/covering, provided that they:
    • Fit snugly, but comfortably, against the side of the face
    • Are secured with ties, ear loops, or equivalent
    • Cover the nose and mouth properly
    • Include multiple layers of fabric
    • Allow for breathing without restriction
    • Can be laundered without damage or change of shape
    • Are appropriate for the workplace and do not otherwise affect the mission of the University

Face masks/coverings shall be worn at all times when on campus. Additionally, social distancing should be maintained in shared campus community spaces such as common areas, break rooms, hallways, lobbies, kitchens, study areas, copy rooms, meeting rooms, locker rooms, and restrooms.

    Visitor/Access Control Policy

At this time, most campus buildings will remain locked. Please use your building/office key to gain entry or call the University Police if you need assistance. Do not hold or prop open exterior doors for any other person.

All visitors to campus must be registered with University Police prior to arrival with the exception of admissions visitors, routine vendors, and specially approved guests. All visitors must undergo symptom screening before arriving to campus. For questions, please contact the COVID-19 liaison at covid19@desales.edu.

    Signage and Posters

The University community and visitors are expected to follow signage on traffic flow through building entrances, exits, elevator usage, and similar common use areas.

  • Illness and Exposure Concerns

Stay Home if You Feel Sick - DeSales University

Students, faculty, or staff having symptoms, or otherwise feeling sick for any reason, must call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions. Do not report to class or leave your residence hall until instructed to do so. Students who commute to campus must call 610-282-1002 and follow the given instructions, do not report to campus unless instructed to do so, or if living on campus.

Students, faculty, or staff having reason to believe that they were exposed to COVID-19 must call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions. Do not report to campus unless instructed to do so, do not leave your residence hall unless instructed to do so.

Students, faculty, or staff who become ill while on campus should immediately isolate themselves from others and call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions. Emergency services will arrange to have the workspace/student room sanitized by a facilities staff member.

  • University Response to a Confirmed or Suspected COVID-19 Case on Campus

The University will request that anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms (fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath) submit to a COVID-19 screening and test at the expense of the University. All medical information gathered from this examination will be kept strictly confidential; however, the University will request that those feeling ill consent to the release of their COVID-19 test results to University emergency response officials in order to best protect the campus community. Note: The list of COVID-19 symptoms may change based on guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and/or the CDC.

Students, faculty, or staff who test positive for COVID-19 will be encouraged to return home until they recover. Students who are not able to return home will be given special accommodation on campus where they can safely recover.

Additionally, any University student, faculty, or staff member who experiences COVID-19 symptoms, or has tested positive for COVID-19, will be asked to assist with contact tracing. This information will be tracked separately from any records, and names will not be released. Depending on the circumstances, the University will notify those impacted if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 exposure on campus.

The University has additional, specific response procedures in place to respond to con-firmed COVID-19 cases on campus, including, but not limited to, rapid testing; contact tracing; quarantine and/or isolation of infected/exposed individuals; deep cleaning and sanitation; temporary facility closures; and schedule modifications. Should the need arise to implement these protocols, the University will provide specific instructions relating to the particular situation.

  • Returning to Campus after Recovering from a Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19 Case

Students, faculty, or staff who are symptomatic with any COVID-19 symptoms (fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath) and/or who have tested positive for COVID-19 will not return to campus until instructed to do so.

The University will follow prevailing CDC and PA DOH guidance in determining when to bring a student, faculty, or staff member recovering from a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case back to campus.

  • Health and Safety Guidance

Bulldog with Mask showing 6 feet distance

    Social Distancing

Keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to COVID-19 and slowing its spread. Since people can spread the virus before they know they are sick, it is important to stay away from others when possible, even if you have no symptoms. Social distancing is important for everyone, especially to help protect people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. We expect that all members of the campus community follow these social distancing practices:

    • Stay at least six feet from other people at all times
    • Do not gather in groups of 10 or more
    • Stay out of crowded places and avoid large group gatherings

For additional information pertaining to social distancing, see the CDCs guidance

Reserved for healthcare workers and other approved areas with task specific hazards.

    * Bandanas, gaiters, buffs, or masks with exhalation valves are NOT acceptable face coverings and will not be permitted for use at DeSales University, as these face coverings have recently been found to transmit droplets into the air. Also, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Considerations for Wearing Masks, masks with exhalation valves or vents allow air to be expelled through holes in the material.  The CDC does not recommend using masks if they have an exhalation valve or vent.

  • Recommendations for Proper Wear of Face Masks/Coverings

    • Always clean hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol prior to putting on, touching covering, or removing your face covering.
    • When securing face covering, use the ear loops, straps, or equivalent from behind the head to secure face covering.
    • Proper face covering will cover both nose and mouth areas of the face.

    Important reminders:

    • Always follow the University’s face mask/covering policy.
    • Do not hoard or stockpile face masks/coverings. The University needs to make sure there are enough for the entire community. Please order your face masks/coverings through emergencyservices@desales.edu, if necessary.
    • Reuse face masks/coverings until they become damaged, soiled, or wet. If a mask becomes damp from normal respiration, perspiration, or from water, remove the masks and store in a sanitary location (paper bag) to allow the mask to dry and then reuse when feasible.
    • Everyone on campus should have a backup face mask/covering stored in a sanitary condition in the event their mask becomes damaged, soiled, or wet.
    • Reusable coverings should be routinely washed, depending on the frequency of use.Standard washing practices and washing machines are satisfactory to wash a face mask/covering properly.
    • If face masks/coverings are not readily available in the supply chain, please conserve and reuse mask so the University can continue to protect the community.

    Precautions

Wearing a face mask/covering does not replace the need for social distancing or other efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. In addition to wearing a face mask/covering, remember to:

    • Avoid contact with those who are sick, stay home if you are sick, and call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions. If you become sick on campus, isolate yourself from others, call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions.
    • Frequently clean hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Practice good cough and sneeze etiquette.
    • Routinely disinfect high touch points, facilities, work areas, personal electronics, and shared equipment and spaces.

Consult OSHA’s Hierarchy of Controls for further health and safety guidance

  • Hand Hygiene/Gloves

Clean Hands Frequently with Soap or Hand Sanitizer

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or touching your face. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and wash your hands after touching your face.

    Gloves

According to the CDC, gloves are not necessary for general use and do not replace good hand hygiene. Washing your hands often is considered the best practice for common everyday tasks; however, University Police and others in high-risk areas should use gloves as part of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

For additional information pertaining to prevention, see the CDCs guidance

  • Face Shields

Students, faculty, or staff who would prefer to wear a face shield may do so, and emergencyservices@desales.edu can provide face shields upon request. If you are unable to wear a face mask/covering a face shield will be provided.

  • Cleaning/Disinfection

Housekeeping teams will clean campus spaces based on CDC guidelines for disinfection and OSHA protocols. Facilities will also maintain hand-sanitizer stations at major building entrances, elevator stops, and high-traffic areas.

Students, faculty, and staff will need to assist with cleaning their personal areas and workspaces with products provided by emergencyservices@desales.edu.

Residence hall and University building occupants should also assist by wiping down commonly used surfaces before and after use with products that meet the CDC’s criteria for use against COVID-19 and are appropriate for the surface. This includes any shared-space location or equipment (e.g., fitness centers, library tables copiers, printers, computers, A/V and other electrical equipment, coffee makers, desks and tables, light switches, doorknobs, etc.). Facilities will provide products for disinfection.

For additional information pertaining to disinfection, see the CDC’s guidance here

  • Coughing/Sneezing Hygiene

Remember to always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue; when you cough or sneeze, use the inside of your elbow. Throw used tissues in the trash. Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizers with greater than 60% alcohol as the preferred form of hand hygiene in healthcare settings.

  • Specific Campus Scenarios

    Classrooms

    • Faculty must wear a face mask/covering while entering/exiting the classrooms, and if anytime they move from the podium.
    • Plexiglass dividers will be installed on the podiums in each classroom.
    • Faculty who wish to teach without a face mask/covering must remain behind the plexiglass at all times.
    • Faculty who would like to move about the classroom may do so, but must wear a face mask/covering
    • Faculty must wipe down all equipment and podiums prior to each use and once the class has concluded.
    • Students will be required to wear a mask/face covering at all times while in the classroom.
    • Students who do not have a mask/face covering must leave and cannot return unless they are wearing a mask/face covering.

    Elevators

Until further notice, all elevators are limited to one person at a time. The use of elevators will be limited to those who have a necessity in order to avoid proximity with others in a confined space. Those using elevators are required to wear a face mask/covering. Users should also avoid touching the elevator buttons with your exposed hand/fingers, if possible. Wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers with greater than 60% alcohol as the preferred form of hand hygiene upon departing the elevator.

    Fitness Centers

Due to the limited number of users allowed in the fitness centers, until further notice, on-campus fitness in Billera Hall and Dorothy Day will be for student use only.

    • There will be strict procedures to ensure these spaces can be enjoyed safely and without the risk of spreading COVID-19. These protocols include:
    • Strict social distancing measures – in order to maintain six feet of separation between users, certain pieces of equipment may be blocked from use.
    • Users are required to wipe down equipment both before and after use.
    • The number of users allowed in the fitness center at any one time may be limited in order to maintain proper social distancing.
    • Specific instructions will be posted in each of the University’s fitness centers.
    • Use of the fitness centers will be by reservation only.

    In-Person Meetings

Convening in groups increases the risk of viral transmission. Students, faculty, and staff should communicate with one another, to the extent possible, by email, text message, telephone, or other available technology rather than face-to-face. Where feasible, meetings should be held in whole or part using available online collaboration tools (e.g. Zoom).

    Meals

Before and after eating, wash your hands thoroughly to reduce the potential transmission of the virus.

When dining on campus resumes in August, students, faculty, and staffs must wear a face mask/covering until ready-to-eat and then replace it afterward. Eating establishments must meet requirements to allow at least six feet of distance between each customer, including lines and seating arrangements. Specific guidance will be posted. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take food back to their office area or eat outside, if this is reasonable.

Only remove face mask/coverings to eat, then put it back on immediately after eating. Wipe all frequently touched surfaces before and after use.

    Office Environments

If you work in an open office environment, be sure to maintain at least six feet distance from coworkers. If possible, have at least one workspace separating you from another coworker. You should wear a face mask/covering at all times while in a shared workspace/room.

Employees should expect measures to physically separate and increase the distance between employees, other coworkers, and customers, such as:

    • Visual cues such as floor decals, colored tape, or signs to indicate to visitors where they should stand upon arrival (e.g. admissions, financial aid, bursar, registrar, etc.)
    • One-way directional signage for large open workspaces with multiple through-ways to increase the distance between employees moving through the space.
    • Designation of specific stairways for up or down traffic in building with more than one stairway.

If an employee has his/her own office, no more than one person should be in the same room unless the required six feet of distance can be consistently maintained. If more than one person is in a room, face masks/coverings must be worn at all times.

Employees must avoid congregating in common areas.

    Prayer and Worship

Along with the outdoor sacred spaces that host blessed statues, Connelly Chapel will be open for private prayer throughout the day. Sunday Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Connelly Chapel, with accommodations made for social distancing. Each Mass will welcome 98 worshippers. Weather permitting, an outdoor Sunday Mass will be celebrated at the Jesus the Teacher statue on the Campus Mall at 4 p.m. As the semester unfolds, we will reconsider the Mass schedule. Worshippers are asked to wear a face mask/covering and follow the lead of ushers to receive Holy Communion. All are encouraged to receive Holy Communion in the hand; those who desire to receive on the tongue will receive after Mass in the sacristy. Daily Mass will be celebrated at 12:05 p.m. in the Wills Hall Chapel. Similar protocols will be followed at daily Mass. Confession will be available on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Wills Hall Chapel and at 3 p.m. in Connelly Chapel with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Please follow the protocols in place for confession.

    Restrooms

New protocols will be posted in each restroom - please follow them carefully. Spaced out restroom visits should occur when possible to limit the number of people in a restroom at the same time. Whenever possible, six feet of distance should be maintained. Always wash your hands thoroughly after use.

  • Testing Process

Due to the limited amount of reagents available, we are currently limiting on-campus testing to symptomatic individuals only. We are unable to test asymptomatic individuals on campus currently. If you are in need of asymptomatic testing, testing is available with appointment for free through CVS or Rite-Aid. Resources are provided at the bottom of this page.

Each day, students/staff/faculty must complete the DeSales COVID-19 screening via the HealthChampion app. If you receive a green/blue check mark, you’re cleared to come to campus!

If you receive a message with a red exclamation point follow the app instructions and call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250 from a University phone. Upon calling the COVID line, basic demographic information will be forwarded to the COVID Response Team. Afterwards, a member of the DeSales COVID response team will contact you, please be sure to keep your cell phone line clear and accept the call.  If you are off campus, please stay off campus until we contact you. If you are on campus, please isolate in your room until we contact you.

The response team member who calls will perform a phone triage assessment. If the team member states you are cleared to come campus, you are welcome on campus. If the team member states you are in need of COVID testing, please follow the processes below:

    Undergraduate students

    On-campus residents

If you have a car, please drive to the Dorothy Day Center to be tested at the COVID Suite at the time you are given. You must enter the building through the side entrance to access the COVID suite.  Do not use the main doors.  You can expect to be at the Dorothy Day COVID Suite for an hour. While you are awaiting test results, the Contact Tracing team will gather contact information, that will only be used, anonymously, if you test positive. Upon a negative test result, all gathered information is securely discarded.

  • Isolation Protocol

Creating and maintaining a healthy environment that limits the opportunity for transmission of COVID-19 is crucial during these times. The university community needs to respect and support one another in following the established protocols outlined in the Ready for Anything commitment and Return to Campus guide.  Compliance with established social distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE), and health and hygiene protocols is expected of all. Repeated or intentional disregard of these protocols is not permissible and will result in disciplinary action and possible loss of privileges to reside on campus and/or attend in-person classes.

All individuals who have tested positive for COVID will be required to isolate for 10 days.

    • If a student is a campus resident but is able to safely go home, they are encouraged to do so.
    • If a student is a campus resident and is unable to safely go home, the student will be placed in specially outfitted isolation housing on campus.
    • If a student lives off-campus, they will follow the above stated protocol. The student will not be allowed to live at their off-campus residence; doing so will result in possible loss of privileges to attend in-person classes.
    • If a student is a commuter from home, they will be required to isolate at home if they can do so safely.  Students who cannot safely quarantine at home due to compromised family members will be moved to an on-campus isolation room.
    • Faculty and staff are required to isolate at home.

The 10 day isolation requirement for COVID+ symptomatic students/faculty/staff is from the first day of onset of symptoms. Example: if symptoms begin on 1/1, a student is tested 1/3, and the test comes back positive, the 10 day isolation period begins on 1/1. The isolation period should end 1/11 and the student will be welcomed back to campus on 1/11, if for the final 48 hours there is no fever without the use of fever-reducing medication and symptoms of COVID-19 are improving. Should there be a fever or other major symptoms in the final 48 hours of the isolation, and/or the symptoms of COVID-19 are not improving, the isolation will be extended.

The 10 day isolation requirement for COVID+ asymptomatic students/faculty/staff is from the day of +COVID testing. Example: if an asymptomatic faculty member tests for COVID on 1/1, and they test positive, the 10 day isolation period begins on 1/1. The isolation period should end 1/11 and the faculty member will be welcomed back to campus on 1/11, if for the final 48 hours there is no fever without the use of fever-reducing medication and any symptoms of COVID-19 are improving. Should there be a fever in the final 48 hours of the isolation, and/or the symptoms of COVID-19 are not improving, the isolation will be extended.

Violation of isolation protocol will result in disciplinary action.

DeSales University’s COVID-19 response is guided by the CDC recommendations, which can be seen here. This policy will be updated with any CDC guideline updates.

  • Quarantine Protocol

Creating and maintaining a healthy environment that limits the opportunity for transmission of COVID-19 is crucial during these times. The university community needs to respect and support one another in following the established protocols outlined in the Ready for Anything commitment and Return to Campus guide.  Compliance with established social distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE), and health and hygiene protocols is expected of all. Repeated or intentional disregard of these protocols is not permissible and will result in disciplinary action and possible loss of privileges to reside on campus and/or attend in-person classes.

All individuals determined by the DeSales University Contact Tracing team to be a contact of a +COVID individual will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

    • If a student is a campus resident but is able to safely go home, they are encouraged to do so.
    • If a student is a campus resident and is unable to safely go home, the student will be moved to the Homewood Suites at 3350 Center Valley Pkwy, Center Valley, PA 18034.
    • If a student lives off-campus, they will follow the above stated protocol. The student will not be allowed to live at their off-campus residence; doing so will result in possible loss of privileges to attend in-person classes.
    • If a student/is a commuter from home, they will be required to quarantine at home if they can do so safely.  Students who cannot safely quarantine at home due to compromised family members will be moved to the Homewood Suites.
    • Faculty and staff are required to quarantine at home.

The 14 day quarantine requirement for students/faculty/staff is from the day of last exposure to the individual who tested positive.

    Example:

    • Student A begins to experience symptoms on 1/1 and tests positive later that same day.
    • Student B is found to be the only close contact to Student A and the date of last contact was 1/1.
    • Student B either goes home or to the Homewood Suites
    • As long as no symptoms arise, Student B is welcome to return back to campus on 1/15.

DeSales University’s COVID-19 response is guided by the CDC recommendations. As of now, CDC guidelines recommend testing for close contact individuals.

Regardless of the test result, the quarantine timeline of 14 days from last exposure to the COVID+ individual will not change.

    Example:

    • We cannot test an exposed student 5 days post-exposure and confirm with certainty that a negative result means the student does not have COVID-19.
    • At that stage, an individual may have contracted the virus without it having replicated enough  detectable through testing.
    • If any symptoms do arise during the quarantine period, we will have the student retested.

This policy will be updated with any CDC guideline updates.

Violation of quarantine protocol will result in disciplinary action.

    CDC recommendation resources:

  • Travel

If you have traveled, or plan to travel, to an area where there are high amounts of COVID-19 cases, it is recommended that you stay at home for 14 days upon return to Pennsylvania. If you travel to the following states, it is recommended that you quarantine for 14 days upon return: PA Department of Health Travel Recommendations

    Business Travel

Due to the risk of spreading the virus that accompanies travel, all University business related travel must have the approval of the appropriate vice president until further notice.

Only mission critical travel will be approved.

    Personal Travel

While personal travel is not restricted, please use common sense when considering the risks associated with personal travel before making plans for a trip. International personal travel is strongly discouraged. Be advised that such travel may be subject to the CDC’s self-monitoring requirement (staying at home and avoiding group gatherings and public spaces) for 14 days from arrival in the United States, before returning to campus. Domestic travel is also discouraged due to high risk areas as defined by CDC guidelines.

DeSales University will closely monitor the changing recommendations and restrictions with travel on the CDC site. As expected, any travel, domestic or international could heighten your risk of exposure.

For additional information pertaining to travel, see the CDCs guidance here

  • Scope

A quote from St. Francis de Sales we often hear repeated at DeSales University, “Nothing is small in the service of God.” Whether washing our hands and wearing a facial covering, or teaching behind plexiglass, or working from home, we are serving God, serving our students, and thwarting a life-threatening virus. It’s understood these changes in our behavior may inconvenience us, but they can—and will—bring us to a new season of hope, replete with rebirth, renewal, and balance.

DeSales University has implemented various protocols to ensure your safety upon returning to campus, however, it’s up to you and your coworkers to execute on these protocols daily. By releasing this employee guidebook, DeSales University hopes to clearly communicate our plans moving forward, highlight workplace protocols in place to protect your safety, and establish a level of comfort for all employees returning to campus.

In the event of an emergency, including those related to COVID-19, please call 911, or if you are on campus, call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250. If you have non-emergency questions related to COVID-19 and DeSales University, please email those questions to covid19@desales.edu. You should receive a response within 24-48 hours. Please note that this email is not for emergency use.

As the situation is constantly evolving, visit www.desales.edu/covid-19 for the latest information on DeSales University’s Ready for Anything commitment.

  • Compliance

To comply with the safety guidelines recommended by federal, state, and local agencies during these unprecedented times, we are requiring that the guidance provided in this COVID-19 Employee Guidebook is followed to the best of your ability and circumstances. By all working together in Salesian Solidarity, we will utilize best practices for a safe campus environment for each other and for our students. In this regard, if an employee is not following protocols included in this guidebook and refuses to comply with the appropriate guidance after it has been brought to their attention, which could result in creating unsafe conditions for themselves, their colleagues and students, the employee may be subject to disciplinary action as outlined in the faculty and staff handbooks.

  • Situation and Assumptions

The COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainty and disruption across the globe. As additional information is learned, DeSales University will continue to adapt and pivot to new challenges and opportunities.

In accordance with the Pennsylvania Governor’s phased approach to reopening the Commonwealth, DeSales University will thoughtfully welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus no later than August 17, 2020, officially marking the start of the 2020 fall semester.

In the spirit of Salesian Solidarity, we are called to keep our community members safe and well. To that end, this guide outlines the various procedures for employees returning to campus and responding to confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus.

  • Return-to-Campus Procedures

Keeping employees safe is our priority. To accomplish this task, there are a number of factors that require thoughtful consideration before bringing employees back to campus. Supervisors will communicate directly with their employees in each department with instructions on how to return to campus for work. These instructions will take into account various methods to protect employees, prevent infections, and mitigate risks, such as alternating workdays, staggered reporting/departing, and reconfigured workspaces, and may vary by department.

DeSales University may phase staff in a coordinated effort to ensure appropriate social distancing and other COVID-19 related guidelines. Additionally, the University will assess expanded staffing based on mission-critical operations; the ability to control and manage specific workplace environments; and the necessity to access on campus resources. The need to reduce the number of people on campus to meet social distancing requirements will continue for some time.

Expanded staffing will be tightly controlled and coordinated by the University in order to mitigate potential risks and to ensure the safety of employees. No department or office may increase on-campus staffing levels without approval from the respective vice president. Once decisions to expand on-campus staffing in certain areas have been made, staff should follow the policies and protocols detailed in this guide for returning to work on campus.

As on-campus staffing and operations expand, the University will closely monitor and assess potential spread, as well as existing policies and protocols. If localized outbreaks emerge, tighter restrictions and reduced staffing may need to be implemented again.

Once employees return to campus, there are several techniques the University will implement in order to maintain social distancing measures and reduce population density within buildings and workspaces.

Under no circumstances should an employee feeling ill report to campus. Instead, employees should follow the procedures below and await further instructions.

  • Classrooms

    • Plexiglass dividers will be installed on the podiums in each classroom.
    • Faculty must wear a face mask/covering when entering/exiting the classrooms, and while teaching.
    • Faculty who wish to teach without a face mask/covering must remain behind the plexiglass at all times.
    • Faculty who would like to move about the classroom may do so, but must wear a face mask/covering.
    • Faculty must wipe down all equipment at the podium prior to each use and once the class has concluded.
    • Faculty are asked to assist in the enforcement of this protocol for the wearing of face masks/coverings.
    • Students will be required to wear a face mask/covering at all times while in the classroom.
    • Students who do not have a face mask/covering must leave and cannot return unless they are wearing a face mask/covering.
  • Dining

The faculty staff dining room will not be available during the fall 2020 semester. This space will be used for prospective students and their families. Faculty and staff are encouraged to eat meals is their offices.
  • Travel

Employees who travel to states where the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has issued a 14-day quarantine recommendation upon return to Pennsylvania are not eligible for the DeSales University COVID-19 Leave Policy*.

Please see Travelers - PA Department of Health – PA.gov

*Employees who have already traveled to a recommended quarantine state (either before or during the time that PA issued a quarantine recommendation) will still be eligible for the COVID-19 Leave Policy.

  • Requirements for all Employees (What to do if you or Someone Near you has Symptoms)

All employees are to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms and use HealthChampion, a COVID-19 self-screening tool, to record temperature and symptoms daily.

Employees may not report to work if they develop any COVID-19 symptoms, have household members with COVID-19 symptoms, or believe they have been exposed to COVID-19.

    If you develop COVID-19 symptoms:

    • Seek medical attention immediately.
    • Request a test for COVID-19 from your healthcare professional, unless your doctor can determine that you do not actually have symptoms of COVID-19 and do not require a test.
      • Alternatively, you may receive a COVID-19 diagnostic test in the University's on-campus test center by calling 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, to schedule an appointment.
    • If symptomatic, or you have tested positive, report your condition to 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, so DeSales University can determine if contract tracing is appropriate.
    • Do not report to campus unless instructed.

Note: If you have a physician-referred test, it will be covered at no cost to you by health insurance. If you get a non-medical professional referred test and health insurance will not cover it, please submit the invoice for the test for reimbursement. This policy will be effective through December 31, 2020, but may be extended as conditions warrant.

If someone in your household develops COVID-19 symptoms or if you suspect or discover you were exposed to a COVID-19-positive individual:

    • Call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, and follow the provided instructions.
    • Do not report to campus unless instructed.

Due to the unique nature of each exposure situation, the University’s COVID-19 Response Team will assist exposed employees in determining their risk category and a plan of action on a case-by-case basis.  In doing so, the University will follow the CDC’s exposure definitions and recommended precautions.

  • School and Daycare Closures

As with severe weather emergencies, school/daycare closures and related issues occur. With mass school/daycare closures in our area for quarantine or precautionary purposes, employees should begin to identify back-up resources for childcare. The following options may be available:

    • Utilization of back-up resources for childcare.
    • Temporary work-from-home arrangement based on supervisor approval.
    • Utilization of time-off using vacation time or personal days as approved by supervisor.

In the event your child has a confirmed case of COVID-19—and is home on quarantine—sick time or unpaid time may be used to care for the child. Usage of eligible FMLA time may be applied when appropriate and per FMLA guidelines and/or the University’s COVID-19 Leave Policy.

  • Remote Work/Work from Home

In departments where productivity can be measured and monitored, supervisors may allow for more flexibility with temporary requests to work from home during this sensitive time-period. It is at the discretion and judgement of that supervisor and vice president, in consultation with human resources, to allow remote work at the request of the employee. Please review the COVID-19 Temporary Remote Work Policy, available through the Department of Human Resources.

  • DeSales University COVID-19 Leave Policy

    This policy provides the following:

    • Up to 80 hours of COVID-19 leave shall be made available to employees unable to perform their assigned duties for the period of July 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. For part-time employees, the amount of available leave will be pro-rated based on the standard part-time hours worked in a week.
      • Employees who are unable to perform their assigned duties during the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible to use COVID-19 leave for the following, but not limited to, conditions:
      • Diagnoses of COVID-19, or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and seeking a diagnosis or requiring time to take a COVID-19 test.
      • Care of an immediate family member who has a diagnosis of COVID-19 or is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and is seeking a diagnosis.
      • Care of an immediate family member subject to a quarantine or self-isolation order or who has been advised to self-isolate.
      • Child/elder care due to school/day care closures related to the effects of COVID-19.
      • Employees who are affected by conditions related to COVID-19 and who are unable to perform their assigned duties by working remotely (telecommute or telework).
    • In instances where employees are unable to perform their assigned duties due to the type of work they perform (meaning the work cannot be performed remotely) but are assigned other duties that CAN be performed remotely, they cannot refuse a reassignment of duties in order to take COVID-19 leave.
    • Employees may use COVID-19 leave prior to using any other accrued leave categories, such as sick time, personal days, or vacation time.
    • COVID-19 leave use, including a determination that an employee is unable to perform their assigned duties, is subject to approval by his/her vice president in consultation with the Office of Human Resources.
    • Use of COVID-19 leave is only available to be claimed during the time period covering the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. This policy expires on December 31, 2020.
    • There is no entitlement to the COVID-19 leave after December 31, 2020.
    • COVID-19 leave does not accrue and may not be rolled-over or combined into other types of leave. COVID-19 time that is unused will not be paid-out to the employee for any reason.

Just as we anticipate students may have good reason to engage in their learning remotely, we recognize that some faculty and staff may self-designate themselves as being in one of the categories recognized by the CDC which places a person at higher risk for severe illness due to the COVID-19 virus.

If a faculty or staff member considers themselves in one of these categories, and requests to seek a reasonable accommodation to on-campus instruction or for continued remote work, the individual should inform their area vice president of their intention. Requests for accommodation or flexibility for continued remote work will be considered on an individualized basis through the Office of Human Resources, in consultation with the respective area vice president.

Please note that while your division head or supervisor may be involved in the process, information about any medical condition, including medical documentation, will not be shared with them without your authorization.

  • Unemployment

    • Unemployment compensation is a government means to assist employees financially when there is no work or lack of work available. If an employee expresses his/her desire to remain home because he/she is receiving more through unemployment compensation, be advised that returning to work is not optional and any refusal to return-to-work, when work is available and offered, will have employment consequences.
    • DeSales University has the legal right as an employer to require a recalled employee to return-to-work, and to also sever the employment relationship if such a recall is refused. For example, a refusal of recall for work, without medical or other good cause, would likely result in the University accepting an employee’s voluntary resignation.
    • Absent good cause, an employee is not eligible for unemployment if he/she refuses suitable work.
  • COVID-19 Temporary Remote Work Policy

DeSales University prides itself on the human connections created within our campus community. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to shutter on-campus operations beginning March 21, 2020, was always deemed temporary and we remain grateful for the ability of our faculty and staff to transition to remote operations. As we are approaching the fall semester Ready for Anything we hold the expectation that all faculty and staff will return to their duties and roles on campus beginning in July 2020 in accordance with the Governor’s phased re-opening.

As part of DeSales University’s ongoing efforts to return to campus operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, this policy provides temporary guidance and flexibilities to facilitate the continuance of remote work arrangements due to the COVID-19 outbreak.  After the University has re-opened campus operations, University employees may work from home or another remote location in accordance with performance expectations and other terms determined by their manager and appropriate Vice President, and subject to approval by Human Resources.

Remote work arrangements may not be feasible in all cases. In addition, remote work arrangements approved under this policy last only for the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak, as defined and communicated by the University over time.

Requesting a Continuing Remote work Arrangement

Faculty and staff requesting the ability to have a continued remote work agreement must complete a request form for approval. All requests will be reviewed by Human Resources and approval will be determined on a case-by-case basis in conjunction with the appropriate department head and/or Vice President, based on factors including the position and the business needs of the department.

    Temporary Remote work Requirements

In addition to any specific terms of an approved temporary remote work arrangement, all temporary remote work arrangements approved under this policy are subject to the following conditions and requirements:

    • The University may modify or suspend a temporary remote work arrangement at any time and for any reason, including problems with employee performance or work conduct, or the business needs of the University.
    • The employee must fulfill all terms and expectations agreed upon with their manager. Unless specified otherwise, the employee is expected to work the same amount of time and work hours as usual.
    • Unless specified otherwise, the employee agrees to work and be available to communicate regarding University matters during normal business hours or as stipulated in a course syllabus, for example.
    • The employee must comply with all University rules, policies and procedures during remote work, including those regarding timekeeping, approval of overtime and use of leave. Violations may result in termination of the temporary remote work arrangement and/or disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
    • The employee must use any equipment or supplies provided by the University for business purposes only, and notify their supervisor immediately of any malfunction, damage or theft involving University property. If it is necessary for the employee to use personal equipment while working remotely, the employee may submit a request for reimbursement of reasonable expenses for equipment that is needed to perform work duties during the temporary remote work period. Such equipment may include toner, paper or the incremental charge for a necessary increase in internet bandwidth to perform work duties.  Such requests will be reviewed and approved at the discretion of the University.
    • The employee must adhere to all University IT policies and procedures, including those governing information security, secure remote access, and data protection.  The employee must notify their supervisor immediately of any unauthorized access or disclosure of confidential information.
    • The employee agrees to maintain a safe and secure work environment and to report work-related injuries to their manager at the earliest reasonable opportunity.  The University assumes no liability for injuries that occur in the employee’s remote work location outside the agreed-upon work hours, or for damages to employee’s real or personal property resulting from their participation in the temporary remote work arrangement.
    • The staff member has responsibility for maintaining the security and confidentiality of university files, data and other information that are in the off-site work place.  All applicable policies and procedures outlined in the Faculty and/or Staff Handbook must be adhered to.
    • Remote work is not to be regarded as a substitute for ongoing child care or adult care. If applicable, the employee will attach a general description of caregiving arrangements due to COVID-19 that will be in effect during the remote work hours. If the employee needs to modify these arrangements, they will inform the supervisor and obtain the necessary approvals to continue the remote work arrangement.
    • Temporary remote work arrangements under this policy do not change an employee’s “at-will” status or basic terms and conditions of employment with the University.  A remote work arrangement is not a contract and does not guarantee employment for any specific term.

Please contact the Office of Human Resources at hr@desales.edu or 610.282.1100 x1660 if you have any questions regarding this policy, or any questions about remote work arrangements not addressed in this policy.

  • Ready for Anything

At DeSales University, it is our priority to keep our students healthy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we will abide by governmental guidelines when possible as we strive to balance public health concerns with the needs of the University. This guide details how we plan to reopen the University, while keeping our campus community as safe as possible for all.

This plan will only succeed with the support of each and every member of the DeSales University community: students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The purpose of this guide is to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on campus and to minimize risk for all.  To achieve this purpose successfully, requires the consistent commitment from all persons. All must abide by the procedures and policies outlined below, including social distancing, wearing face masks/coverings, handwashing hygiene, and more.

This guide outlines information provided by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), as well as guidance from other regulatory organizations.

While the University will implement protocols to ensure safety, it is up to each individual on campus to execute on these protocols daily. In order to keep our University safe, it is imperative that from the individual level to an organizational level, all parties abide by the regulations outlined in this guide. In addition to communicating our plans to move forward, DeSales University offers this guide to highlight campus protocols now in place to protect student, faculty, and staff’s safety, and to establish a level of comfort for all of our students, employees, and visitors, for your return to campus.

All students are expected to fully comply with the policies, protocols, and guidelines outlined in this document and others as part of the DeSales University Ready for Anything commitment. Failure to comply could result in drastic changes to campus life and jeopardize the University’s ability to offer a full educational experience.

In an emergency, please call 911, or if you are on campus, (610) 282-1002 or extension 1250. If you have non-emergency questions related to COVID-19 and DeSales University, please email those questions to covid19@desales.edu. You should expect to receive a response within 24-48 hours. Please note that this email is not for emergency use.

Our knowledge and understanding of the COVID-19 virus continue to evolve, and our policies and plans will be updated appropriately as more information becomes available.
  • Before You Begin Your Day

All members of the DeSales community (students, faculty, and staff) who will be visiting campus that day will conduct a daily health check by completing a health assessment using, Health Champion, a COVID-19 screening app. Prior to arrival on campus, you will receive an invitation to download the app.

Upon successful completion of the health screening each day, the result will be either a green screen or a red screen:

    • Green—No further action is needed. You may report to campus, attend class, participate in daily activities, etc.
    • Red—Do not report to campus; do not report to class. Remain where you are and call 610-282-1002, or extension 1250, if you are on campus and follow the instructions provided to you. Immediately call 911 in the event of an emergency.
  • Health & Safety—Face Masks and Coverings

    • All students, faculty, staff, and visitors are required to wear a face mask/covering at all times while they are on campus. Face mask/covering must fully cover the nose and mouth. Exceptions for wearing a face mask/covering includes times when individuals are alone outdoors, and while in personal spaces at times when contact with others is not suspected or likely (provided a face mask/covering is available to wear if the situation changes).
    • Please wash or sanitize your hands each time prior to handling your mask.
    • Students are encouraged to bring their own face mask/covering, provided that they:
      • Allow for breathing without restriction
      • Are secured with ties, ear loops, or equivalent
      • Can be laundered without damage or change of shape
      • Cover the nose and mouth properly
      • Do not display any offensive images or language
      • Fit snugly, but comfortably, against the side of the face
      • Include multiple layers of fabric
    • The University will provide a face mask/covering to any student who requests one, please email: emergencyservices@desales.edu in order to obtain a mask.
    • Wash your cloth mask after each daily use.

For more information on the use of face masks/covering please see the DeSales University Return-to-Campus Guide.

  • Health & Safety—Social Distancing

Keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to COVID-19 and slowing its spread. Because people can spread the virus before they exhibit any symptoms, it is important to stay away from others when possible, even if you do feel well. Social distancing is important for everyone, especially to help protect people who are at higher risk. We expect that all members of the campus community follow these social distancing practices:

    • Do not gather in groups of 10 or more.
    • Stay at least six feet from other people at all times.
    • Stay out of crowded places and avoid large group gatherings.
  • Health & Safety—Hand Washing

Wash your hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or touching your face. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Facilities & Environment—What to Expect on Campus

DeSales University has implemented various campus protocols designed to protect the health and safety of our community, prevent infections, and mitigate risks as students return to campus. This section offers further details regarding these protocols. Additionally, the campus community should be alert for supplemental policies, signage, and other directions. For additional information, please visit the CDC website.

  • Facilities & Environment—Cleaning and Disinfecting

Housekeeping teams will clean campus spaces based on CDC guidelines for disinfection and OSHA protocols. Facilities will also maintain hand-sanitizer stations at major building entrances, elevators, and high-traffic areas.

Students are expected to assist with cleaning their rooms, personal areas, and workspaces with products provided by emergencyservices@desales.edu.

Residence hall and University building occupants should also assist by wiping down commonly used surfaces before and after use with products that both meet the CDC’s criteria for use against COVID-19 and are appropriate for the type of surface. This includes any shared-space location or equipment (e.g., fitness centers, library tables, copiers, printers, computers, A/V and other electrical equipment, coffee makers, desks and tables, light switches, doorknobs, etc.). Facilities will provide products for disinfection.

  • Facilities & Environment—Outdoor Campus Spaces

When walking on campus sidewalks, please always stay to the right side of the walkway to provide at least six feet of distance from pedestrians walking in the opposite direction.

Tents will be set up around campus for student use. While inside of a tent, please maintain use of face masks/coverings and social distancing protocol.

  • Facilities & Environment—Signage and Posters

The University has developed a portfolio of signage and decals to guide building occupants and visitors as they enter, travel through, occupy, and exit buildings. Common areas in buildings such as: main entry doors, corridors, lobbies, waiting areas, will be populated with signage with reminders of safe hygiene practices and other important information.

Please continue to view and comply with signage from the University.

  • Facilities & Environment—Entering, Exiting, and Circulating Through Buildings

Among other measures, larger buildings may have doors designated as “Enter” or “Exit” in order to minimize congestion in these areas.

Building occupants navigating through building corridors and hallways should follow the right side of these passageways and should avoid congregating.

  • Facilities & Environment—Elevators and Stairs

Occupants are encouraged to use stairs for vertical circulation through buildings and should follow the right side of stairways.

Elevators are limited to one occupant. Those waiting for elevators in lobbies should practice appropriate physical distancing. The use of elevators will be limited to those who have a necessity in an effort to avoid proximity with others in a confined space. Those using elevators are required to wear a face mask/covering. Users must avoid touching the elevator buttons with exposed hands/fingers, if possible. Wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers with greater than 60% alcohol as the preferred form of hand hygiene upon departing the elevator.

  • Facilities & Environment—Restrooms

Individuals are expected to keep at least six feet of distance in restrooms across campus. Please be mindful of the number of individuals inside a building restroom, and limit occupancy to ensure appropriate physical distancing.

Wash your hands thoroughly after each use.

  • Facilities & Environment—Meetings

Convening in groups increases the risk of viral transmission. Students, faculty, and staff should communicate with one another, to the extent possible, by email, text message, telephone or other available technology rather than face-to-face.

Where feasible, meetings should be held in whole or part using available online collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom). Students who require an in-person meeting with a faculty or staff member must schedule ahead of time. Walk-in meetings are not permissible.

If it is necessary to hold meetings in-person, faculty and staff are asked to limit the number of attendees present, wear a face mask/covering, and ensure that all individuals are able to appropriately physical distance (i.e., six feet apart).

  • Academics—Course Instruction

In order to provide a flexible and safe learning environment, courses include a blend of in-class instruction, student participation via Zoom, and online engagement via the Blackboard learning management system. Based on the needs of specific courses, the instructional modality includes one of five formats:

    1. In-Person: Classes with enrollment that does not exceed the physical distance seating capacity meet in-person, with accommodations for attendance via Zoom.
    2. In-Person/Connected: Classes with enrollment that exceed the physical distance seating capacity blend in-person classroom attendance with a live Zoom (connected) classroom presence (In-Person/Connected). Students rotate from attending in-person to attending via live using Zoom. In this mode, all students (classroom and connected) are present in real time and attendance is taken using a system that maximizes in-person attendance and minimizes connected attendance. Students are informed of the class rotation schedule on each instructor’s syllabus which is be posted on Blackboard prior to the start of the course.
    3. Hybrid/In-Person: In general, classes meet with all students in-person half of the time in the classroom and half of the time online (asynchronously). For example, a hybrid course meets in class on Tuesday with online coursework and assignments that complete equivalency requirements for total in-class hours.
    4. Hybrid/In-Person/Connected:  The same as the previous, but due to room capacity, on days when class meets in-person, students are rotated from attending class in-person to attending via live Zoom.
    5. Fully Online: Classes are conducted online, with a blend of synchronous and asynchronous online activities, as outlined by the instructor.

The assignment of instructional modalities is available in WebAdvisor and can be found in the “Comments” on the My Class Schedule option. Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the course instructional modality is subject to change.  To ensure they are appropriately equipped for fall courses, students should review the technology requirements for all University courses; these requirements are also outlined below.  Additional guidance on course instructional modality and learning spaces maybe found in this informational video.

Students are required to check their symptoms on a daily basis using the HealthChampion app. If a student is symptomatic, they should not come to class in-person, but attend class via live Zoom (connected) using the link in their Blackboard course. When feasible, every class will be conducted to accommodate students who need to attend class via live Zoom in the event that they demonstrate COVID-19-related symptoms or need to self-quarantine. To provide both flexibility and access to in-class lectures during the pandemic, faculty have been asked to record their Zoom sessions.

Students who are unable to return to an on-campus learning environment may be able to attend via live Zoom; however, not all courses can accommodate such connected participation if being physically present in the classroom is required for experiential learning.  Students who are seeking to attend class via live Zoom should contact Carolyn Tiger, director of the DSO, who will work with the students and inform their instructors of this accommodation.

Students who have questions about any of the above academics information or other matters related to course instruction, please contact Academic.Affairs@desales.edu.

  • Academics—Classrooms and Extended Classrooms

With the assistance of the Office of Campus Environment, physical distancing room capacities have been determined and adjustments to classrooms have been made as needed. This included the removal of furniture, or the designation of allowable seating spaces to allow for six feet of distance between student seats. With these adjustments to learning spaces, the modality of instructional delivery depends, in part, on course enrollment numbers and the newly determined seating capacities. Additional spaces on campus (i.e., conference rooms in the University Center, Wills Hall, tents, etc.) are also being utilized for instruction of courses with large enrollment numbers.

The following protocols are in place for use of classroom spaces:

    • Students are required to wear a face mask/covering at all times while in the classroom.
    • Students who do not have a face mask/covering must leave and are not permitted to return unless they are wearing a face mask/covering.
    • Students are asked to wipe down their desks before each class period begins.

Students in nursing and healthcare programs should anticipate that in courses with laboratory components, it will be necessary to make physical contact with a lab partner and/or standardized patient in order to learn and practice selected skills. Along with each partner wearing masks and observing hand-washing practices previously described, efforts to mitigate excessive exposure will occur by limiting student-to-student to one lab partner for all courses in which this type of learning experience is required.

    Extended Classrooms

Some classrooms on campus are not in use on certain days/times, and have been designated as “Extended Classrooms” where students can reserve a seat to attend class when it is their turn to attend class via live Zoom (connected), or to conduct other online course activities. Reservations for a seat in Extended Classrooms and spaces in the library can be made one week in advance via a web-based reservation system. In addition to study carrels placed around campus (first-come, first-served basis; no reservations required), Extended Classrooms provide spaces for commuter students and connected students throughout the day.

Students who have questions about any of the above academics information or other matters related to course instruction, please contact Academic.Affairs@desales.edu.

  • Academics—Healthcare Simulation Center

    • Face masks/coverings that are tight to the face are to be properly worn covering the mouth and nose anytime in the Simulation Center spaces.
    • Students should work to maintain physical distancing requirements of remaining 6 feet apart except during a simulated physical exam or simulated treatment of a human patient simulator, standardized patient or fellow student. This includes when working on training specific tasks.
    • Students are expected to wipe down the spaces they have used during any simulation prior to leaving so that groups entering will enter to a sanitized space. Sanitizing liquid is available in all rooms and wipes will be available either in the rooms or adjacent to the simulation spaces. Students entering those same rooms may also wipe down the spaces as needed.
    • Students are to wear gloves in addition to the mask during any physical exam maneuvers performed on any standardized patient, fellow student, or manikin in order to minimize direct contact and cross contamination.
    • Whenever possible, simulation pre-briefing will occur via Blackboard announcement or other means rather than in person just prior to the simulation to further mitigate avoidable interpersonal contact.
    • Students are required to continue wearing masks when in the conference rooms even when accessing those spaces outside of a simulation.

Students who have questions about any of the above academics information or other matters related to course instruction, please contact Academic.Affairs@desales.edu.

  • Campus Dining—Modifications and Options

DeSales University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in partnership with Sodexo Dining Services, includes implementing a plan of operational and procedural changes to ensure the safest environment possible for students, faculty, staff, guests, and Sodexo employees.

The previously discussed face mask/covering protocol and social distancing protocol is in effect in all food service areas. These guidelines will help you navigate your way through our Dining Services.

Following the recommended governmental and agency guidelines, DeSales has elected to implement a cautious, measured approach that best ensures that the campus community will enjoy their dining experience, as well as provide flexibility for students to choose the dining options that maximizes their comfort.

    Dining Modifications and Options

Some procedures and operations are changing within the Dining Services in order to deliver safe, high-quality food in a carefully controlled environment. Please be aware that these are temporary solutions as we navigate through the changes being made according to all guidelines from the applicable federal and state authorities:

    • All appropriate health and sanitization protocols are followed.
    • All dining facilities are cashless as of August 1, 2020.

    • Occupancy in each dining area is limited (or not allowed) based on state guidance, but we encourage students to take advantage of our mobile ordering app for convenience.
    • One-way entrance and one-way exit foot-traffic patterns have been established in the main dining facility (DUC), along with a separate entrance for mobile ordering pick-up.
    • Pre-packaged flatware, napkins, containers, cups, and condiments are to be used.
    • Six-feet distance markers are placed around dining food stations and all diners are expected to comply with these demarcations.

  • Student Life—Office of Residence Life and Housing

Undergraduate residence halls are operating at standard occupancy, though significantly enhanced cleaning and other adjustments in our common life are necessary to keep one another safe. Adjustments to residence halls and their operations include:

    • Assigned roommates are considered a “household” for purposes of contact tracing. Students do not need to wear face masks/coverings when they are in their assigned rooms, but they must wear face masks/coverings in all other rooms and common spaces, including hallways and lounges.
    • Hall lounge capacities are adjusted for physical distancing.
    • Protocols and designated areas have been developed for quarantine and isolation in case residential students report COVID-19 exposure or symptoms.
    • Residential students are not permitted to enter residential buildings other than their own. Additionally, residents should maintain six feet of social distancing if welcoming others into their rooms.
    • Social distancing is required in all residence hall lounges, restrooms, and common areas. Plexiglass barriers have been installed where necessary. Reduced capacities are posted and must be respected.
    • The University’s housekeeping staff has put in place a schedule to maintain regular cleanings, including disinfecting high touch surfaces multiple times a day.
    • To help prevent congestion and prevent potential transmission in the residence halls, outside visitors are not permitted. There are designated locations in the Dorothy Day Student Union where students can welcome visitors.
  • Student Life—Office of Student Conduct

Creating and maintaining a healthy environment that limits the opportunity for transmission of COVID-19 is crucial during these times. We need to respect and support each other in meeting these standards and holding each other accountable. Compliance with the established social distancing, personal protective equipment (PPE), and health and hygiene protocols is expected of us all. Repeated or intentional disregard of the protocols is not permissible and will result in disciplinary action and possible loss of privileges to reside on campus and/or attend in-person classes.
  • Student Life—Student Activities

All events and activities sponsored and approved by the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership are a combination of virtual and in-person (where permitted) until further notice.

Approved face masks/coverings, temperature checks, and social distancing are mandatory for all in-person events sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership. No exceptions. Students are asked once to put on a face mask/covering, if they do not comply, they will be asked to leave. The covering of the face with a shirt does not count and will not be permitted, appropriate face masks/coverings only.
    • The maximum size for events is determined by compliance with governmental and health official’s recommendations for campus space as well as within DeSales University’s space regulations.
    • ENGAGE, the online portal for student engagement, is being used in the following ways this upcoming fall:
      • All events must have proposals submitted and approved.

    Signage and Posters

The University community and visitors are expected to follow signage on traffic flow through building entrances, exits, elevator usage, and similar common use areas.

Guest Speaker / Academic Department Visitor Policy

Whenever possible, guests who plan to engage with academic departments (guest speakers, prospective students, participants in classroom activities) should be encouraged to participate remotely.  A guest speaker or visitor who is invited on-campus must complete a Pre-Campus Visit Questionnaire 48 hours in advance of visiting.

It is the responsibility of the host faculty, administrative or staff member to initiate the following steps while coordinating a guest’s visit to campus:

    1. Direct the visitor to the Pre-Campus Visit Questionnaire, which must be completed 48 hours in advance of a visit to campus.
    2. Provide the visitor with your email address so that you receive confirmation that the Pre-Screening form has been received.
    3. Review the visitor’s responses prior to the campus visit.  If the visitor answers YES to any of the questions on the form, we ask that you reschedule the visit to campus for a future date.
Nursing and/or Healthcare professionals who work in a facility with known exposure risks (i.e. clinic, hospital) may still be able to visit campus if personal protective equipment (PPE) was employed or required by your employer during all possible periods of exposure. It is the host’s responsibility to review, discuss and approve ‘exceptions’ prior to submission of the form.
    4. On the day of the visit, please have your guest check-in with the Office of University Police prior to visiting your department or classroom.  All visitors who submit the questionnaire will receive an auto-generated response with directions to the Lawless Center and steps to follow on the day of their visit.
