Need professional attire free of charge? Shop the Career Development Center’s Career Closet
The Career Development Center has long helped students with their resumes, cover letters, and job searches. Now, it’s dressing them for success—free of charge.
The center opened an online Career Closet back in the spring. The closet, which students can access through ENGAGE, features everything from suits and ties to dresses and handbags. Any undergraduate or graduate student can browse the online gallery and pick the professional attire that’s right for them.
“You never know what students are struggling with. You never know if they’re struggling to feed themselves or their families; you never know if they’re struggling just to take care of the bare necessities. Some students aren’t able to go to Macy’s and get a brand-new suit. That’s why having a Career Closet on campus is so beneficial.”
Samantha Martin ’22, a former career ambassador, first suggested the idea two years ago. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and plans for the closet were put on hold. Things finally got off the ground in the spring of 2021, with current career ambassadors running the initiative and Hiscox overseeing it.
Student shoppers are limited to one item of each type of clothing per online visit. Once selections are made, career ambassadors retrieve the items, steam them, and place them in a garment bag for students to pick up. Students also receive an accessory kit complete with a lint roller, sewing kit, and mints.
“Our office strives to be innovative, to listen to students’ needs, and to meet those needs to the best of our ability,” says Hiscox. “We went full speed ahead, and I’m very proud of our students’ accomplishments in bringing this to fruition.”
The clothing, which the DSU community donated, comes in a variety of sizes. Anything that doesn’t fit can be returned. Students with sensory needs can also make an appointment to see the clothing before they take it home.
