Please join us at noon on Tuesday, December 22, to celebrate the life of Dr. Caroline Hollshwandner, founder of the nursing program at DeSales, who recently died at 102.

Dr. Hollshwandner joined DeSales—then Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales—in March of 1974 as founder and chair of the nursing program. A decade later, she was named project director of the newly created Master of Science in Nursing Program, the first MSN program in the Lehigh Valley.

“May God bless Dr. Hollshwandner, the pioneer of our nursing program, who set a precedent on the expectation of delivering high quality nursing education at DeSales University,” says Mary Elizabeth Doyle-Tadduni, PhD, MBA, MSN, RN, division head of nursing. “May her life and service she had to God and to her students continue into our future years in the Division of Nursing here at DeSales. Thank you, Dr. Hollshwandner, for starting our nursing program 46 years ago. You will always have a special place in our hearts, our minds, and our love for our nursing profession. We are eternally grateful for your service and devotion to nursing here at DeSales.”

Dr. Hollshwandner has received numerous accolades throughout her storied career at DeSales, including an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 1987 and the rank of professor emerita in 1994. To mark her 100th birthday in 2018, Fr. Greenfield and Fr. Gambet declared every September 12 as Dr. Caroline Hollshwandner Day at DeSales.
