Julie Himmelberger, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Biochemistry; Pre-Health Professions Advisor
Dr. Julie (Aaron) Himmelberger joined the DeSales University faculty in 2010, where she is associate professor of biochemistry. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at McMaster University in 2005, followed by her Ph.D. in biological chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. During her Ph.D. studies, she was the recipient of a National Institute of Health Predoctoral Fellowship for research at the Chemistry-Biology Interface.
Dr. Himmelberger teaches general chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry research seminar, and food science. As part of her food science course, Dr. Himmelberger has led several international trips to countries including Scotland, Germany, and Austria. Her research interests include protein X-ray crystallography, evolutionary relationships among proteins, antimicrobial peptides, and the development of structure-based biochemistry teaching labs.
Dr. Himmelberger also serves as the pre-health professions advisor and the faculty mentor of the pre-health professions club. Dr. Himmelberger provides mentoring and programming to science majors who are interested in pursuing graduate degrees in the health professions, including allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies.
Dr. Himmelberger lives in Montgomery County with her husband and daughters. When she is not teaching, she enjoys baking, crafts, traveling, and spending time with her family.
