Act 1 to Continue Virtual Season in Spring 2021

With the positive response to its fall virtual season, Act 1 will continue in 2021 with a full spring season of virtual productions.

The DeSales TV/Film students have been instrumental in filming these productions to deliver them in a virtual format. In addition, the Act 1 faculty and guest directors and designers continue to enjoy the challenge of discovering new ways to design sets, costumes, lighting, and sound for both social distancing and filmed live productions. Following is a list of the spring slate of events:

Spoon River Anthology

Every character in Spoon River Anthology is dead. And the dead speak. As they lie together in their earthen tombs, they spill forth their secrets to the living. From its first appearance as a serial in the pages of William Marion Reedy’s Mirror in 1914, the American literary world had not seen anything quite like Spoon River Anthology, and the world has yet to see its true successor, despite its influence and imitators. The Spoon River dead speak for all of us, and their secrets are the hidden things that prick at the hearts of each of us. Ages 12+

The Trojan Women

Immediately following the fall of Troy, the Trojan women grapple with how to survive their future as captives of the Greek conquerors. In the writing of this first anti-war play, Euripides gives us a clear picture of the aftermath of war and the desperate attempts of the Trojan Queen, Hecuba, to comfort and lead her subjects to their fate. Ages 14+

Songs for a New World

A musical revue that features the songs of Tony Award winning composer and lyricist, Jason Robert Brown, who also wrote scores for the musicals The Last Five Years, The Bridges of Madison County, and Parade. Brown says of the show “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” Brown’s unique style fuses pop, jazz, and gospel music creating a contemporary landscape of life in America. Ages 12+

The 21st Annual Film Festival
April 9, 2021
An exciting showcase of world premiere films, features the emerging voices of film directors, screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, designers, editors, animators, and actors in the DSU film department. A platform for young filmmakers taking their first steps toward a professional career, the festival features a variety of genre and cinematic journeys. Ages 12+

Dance Ensemble Concert

Features choreography by renowned guest choreographers and our accomplished dance faculty. This annual highlight of our dance season will feature a beautiful blend of new and innovative choreographic premieres. Recorded on our main stage, the Dance Ensemble concert showcases the stunning versatility of our talented dance majors. Ages 6+

Pirates! Theodore Thud and the Quest for Weird Beard

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with our senior theatre majors! After falling into a sinkhole during a game of pirates, Theodore finds himself on a real high sea adventure. With the help of friends Mr. Bananas, the Sock Monkey, and Harriet, the Ghost, he embarks on an epic journey to find the infamous Captain Weird Beard and foil the plan of Mr. Clunky Bones. With the power of friendship and a little newfound courage, Theodore learns what it really means to be a pirate and puts a stop to evil; all before going home for ice cream. All ages.

All Access Passes are available for the Spring 2021 Virtual Season. An All Access Pass offers access to all six productions of the Spring Season for a savings of $12 which equals one free ticket. 

Group Sales 
Act 1 offers half price tickets for groups of 10 or more. Spoon River Anthology, The Trojan Women, The Dance Ensemble Concert, and The Film Festival are $6 per person. Songs for a New World is $7.50 per person for groups of 10 or more.
