Despite being a relatively young institution, DeSales has enjoyed a strong history of helping students reach their full potential and gain acceptance to Allopathic, Osteopathic, Veterinary, and Dental Medical programs. As such, we view the traditional term "Pre-Med," to encompass all of the above health professions. This site was designed to help educate the potential Pre-Med candidate regarding the philosophy and scope of our program. We feel confident that once reviewed, you will appreciate the quality of the educational program we offer at DeSales University.
There is no specific "Pre-Med," major at DeSales University. Rather, students are encouraged to pursue whatever area of interest they have. However the "pre-med," student will need to take certain courses that are prerequisite for taking the medical college admission test (MCAT) in addition to the general college requirements for graduation. These courses should be started during the freshman year in order to complete them in a timely fashion (typically these can be completed by the beginning of the junior year and then the MCAT taken during that year).
The traditional "pre-med," courses are as follows:
- General Biology (2 semesters)
- General Chemistry (2 semesters)
- Organic Chemistry (2 semesters)
- Physics (2 semesters)
- Calculus I and II (some schools like statistics as well)
