DeSales Mu Omicron wins Sigma Theta Tau Chapter Key Award

The DeSales University chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society, has won the prestigious Chapter Key Award for the very first time.

“The important part, for me, is that getting a key award means that we are doing what we are supposed to be doing as a chapter,” says Karen Peterson, assistant professor of nursing and president of Mu Omicron, the DeSales chapter. “Whether we got the award or not showed that we were striving to achieve the goals that the organization set.”

With more than 500 chapters of Sigma currently active worldwide, only 88 chapters were chosen to receive this award, making this win no small feat.

In order to be considered for the award, chapters must complete an application and demonstrate how they have fulfilled each of the goals.

Some examples of how Mu Omicron attained these goals include

  • sponsoring a child in Liberia, which allows for the child to receive an education

  • helping support the Allentown Rescue Mission

  • holding conferences to foster the continuing education of nurses.

The Chapter Key Award is given out at Sigma’s official conferences, held every two years, where the society’s president sets the goals that the chapters aim to achieve. This past cycle’s goals were philanthropy, advocacy, lifelong learning, and policy.

Mu Omicron was also recognized at the regional level, winning three Regional Excellence Awards.

Peterson says that student involvement in the chapter is critical to succeeding in years to come, and they are already “in the process for the next key award.” Mu Omicron hopes to continue its success at the international level at the next biennial meeting of Sigma, which will be held in 2019.
