DeSales Healthcare Students Gain Insight to End of Life/Palliative Care

More than 150 students, faculty, staff and community members of DeSales University attended a lecture in end of life care on Wednesday, April 12. The speaker, Debra Wiegand, PhD, RN, CCRN, CHPN, FAHA, FPCN, FAAN, is an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the president-elect of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.

Weigand (above) presented her studies featuring families of patients with both acute and chronic life-limiting illnesses and injuries that have died after life-sustaining therapies have been withdrawn. Wiegand also presented research conducted with bereaved families.

Wiegand's research has been published in journals such as AACN Advanced Critical Care, the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing, the Journal of Gerontological Nursing, and Palliative & Supportive Care.
