Rev. Bernard F. O’Connor, OSFS, president of DeSales University, will award degrees to 120 graduating students during winter commencement on Saturday, January 21. The ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Billera Hall on the Center Valley campus.
In addition, in September 2016, the University awarded 226 degrees to students. Because there is no formal ceremony in September, those graduates may take part in the January commencement.
Kevin F. Flemming (right), president and CEO of the INTEGRITY group of companies and a DeSales alumnus, will deliver the commencement speech. Flemming joined Integrity Personnel, Inc. in 1997 and was appointed president of the Lehigh Valley-based staffing company in 2004. He founded IntegritySBS, a business process outsourcing company, in 2008.
Flemming earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from DeSales and has been a longtime supporter of the University community. He is a member of the DeSales President’s Council, the board of the Forum for Ethics in the Workplace, and serves as chairman of the Societas Award for Responsible Corporate Conduct. He was scheduled to deliver the commencement address at last January’s graduation. But due to inclement weather, both the 2016 and 2015 ceremonies were cancelled.
Because of the cancellations the 2015, 2016, and 2017 DeSales Medal will be presented at this ceremony. The medal is the highest non-academic award given by the University. It recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of the University through personal service and financial support.
Longtime DeSales employees Dcn. George and Joanne Kelly will be presented with the DeSales Medal for 2017. George Kelly, a member of the first graduating class of Allentown College in 1969, came to DeSales in September 1979 as assistant director of development and public relations. He also held the positions of director of admissions and vice president for enrollment management. Most recently he served for 16 years as the director of institutional research. Joanne Kelly was the biology lab manager for 28 years.
Willard and Marie Cressman will be awarded the 2016 DeSales Medal. Willard Cressman spent 16 years as the vice president for administration, finance, and campus environment.
Mike and Wilhelmina Laroche will be recognized as the 2015 recipient of the DeSales Medal. Mike Laroche is a 1975 alumnus, permanent deacon at Holy Trinity Church in Whitehall, and district manager of the Social Security office in Stroudsburg. Wilhelmina Laroche is a retired schoolteacher.
