DeSales University has named Phyllis Vogel, coordinator of technical services for Trexler Library, and Lynn Hoover, administrative secretary and receptionist in the institutional advancement office, the 2014 Employees of the Year.
Vogel received the Professional Staff Employee of the Year award and Hoover received the Support Staff Employee of the Year award. Both of the recipients were chosen for their years of hard work and dedication to DeSales University and were recently honored at the University’s annual Service Awards Dinner.
The Employee of the Year awards are given annually to a professional and a support staff member in recognition of outstanding service. Recipients distinguish themselves through their commitment to the University; exemplify the values for which the University stands, and service that demonstrates such characteristics as effort, skill, positive attitude and creativity in the work place.
Vogel was a Bucks County native and moved to Coopersburg as a teenager. She graduated from Southern Lehigh High School and began working at DeSales University in 1969 as secretary to the library director.
“Being named employee of the year is great. It’s good to know that you are appreciated for your work. I am truly honored,” says Vogel.
Vogel was invaluable in August 1971, as the library, which used to be located in Dooling Hall, flooded. She carried out the books and helped order and process replacements. She was promoted to the position of coordinator of technical services in 1984 and still holds that position today. She moved to Trexler Library when it opened in 1988, and she helped in the renovation process 25 years later. Vogel has been married to her husband Dale for 41 happy years and enjoys reading and watching her beloved Phillies.
Hoover formerly lived on Taylor Drive, where she could see DeSales from her house. She would later move to Emaus. She has worked in the Office of Institutional Advancement for 15 years as an administrative secretary/receptionist.
“It means they value what I do. It really was a surprise and a great honor,” says Hoover on winning the award.
She is the mother of two DeSales graduates. Her son Matthew '07 graduated from the first sports and exercise science class while her daughter Jessica '13 graduated with a degree in marketing. She is also the mother-in-law to a DeSales graduate: Lauren '08 graduated from the DeSales nursing program. Hoover and her husband Bret have been married for 36 years. Together they enjoy riding their Can Am Spyder, usually tandem with Bret as the driver.
