by Tom McNamara | May 02, 2012

On Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 6:00 p.m., the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia will present “In Search of Self: A Portfolio Perspective of the Lehigh Valley Economic Outlook” at the Commonwealth Room in the DeSales University Center on the University’s Center Valley, Pa., campus. The event is free but reservations are required.

For tickets or more information on this event, please call 610-282-1100, ext. 1364, or e-mail lynn.hoover@desales.edu.

The presentation, directed to the Lehigh Valley business community, will feature economic analysts discussing the economic growth occurring in the region compared to other areas in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

“Economic regions throughout the world strive to define a positive regional identity and often struggle to overcome their own negative self perceptions,” said Paul Flora, senior economic analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. “This is particularly true of regions that have lost significant, defining industries such as big steel. Having recovered more fully from the Great Recession than most of its neighbors in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley should have a positive story to tell.”

Flora and economic analysts Elif Sen and Mike Trebing from the Philadelphia Fed will offer their expertise in describing current economic trends and prospects for the Lehigh Valley within a regional and national context. The presentation will focus on the region’s economic diversification – taking a portfolio perspective of the region’s industries to describe its performance and its prospects.

“This is the first time that the Philadelphia Fed has come to our region specifically to address what makes the Lehigh Valley’s economy tick,” said Kevin Flemming, president of Integrity Personnel, Inc. Flemming was appointed to the Fed’s 12-person Economic Advisory Council in 2010 to provide insight into the Lehigh Valley’s business climate.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia helps formulate and implement monetary policy, supervises banks and bank and savings and loan holding companies, and provides financial services to depository institutions and the federal government. It is one of the 12 regional Reserve Banks that, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., make up the Federal Reserve System. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank serves eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware.
