TESOL Master of Education and/or ESL Program Specialist Certification

Recent studies indicate that Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students are the most rapidly growing population in U.S. schools today. A shortage of well-trained ESL teachers means graduates of this program will find their skills in high demand.

Master of Education in TESOL 
34-36 credits for TESOL degree

As a graduate of the Master of Education in TESOL, often called ESL, you will be prepared to demonstrate:

  • a thorough understanding of English perceived as a second language

  • premier ESL teaching and learning strategies

  • skills in applying theoretical knowledge to practice

  • an awareness of the realities of the multicultural classroom

  • a commitment to continued professional growth

The TESOL degree includes courses required for ESL Program Specialist by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Education, qualifying certified teachers to serve as ESL teachers.

16-18 credits for certification

For those educators who do not wish to pursue the full TESOL masters degree, DeSales offers courses required for ESL Program Specialist Certification as a separate offering.

This program is designed to impart the knowledge and skills to teach English language learners, and is structured to:

  • sensitize teachers to the needs of students from various cultures and background

  • thoughtfully examine language and literacy acquisition

  • educate teachers to become reflective practitioners

Program Requirements

English Learning Foundations:  9 credits for certification and degree

  •      ED 515 Foundations of English Language Learners

  •      ES 535 Language and Literacy Acquisition of English Language Learners

  •      ES 540 Applied Linguistics for Language Learning

Major Courses:  6 credits for certification and degree

  •      ES 538 Instructional Practices for EL Classrooms

  •      ES 536 EL Assessment, Data, and Instructional Modification

Field Practice:  1-3 credits for certification or degree (choose one below)

  •      ES 5530 (1 credit) 60 hour Clinical Field Practicum for ESL

  •      ES 554 (3 credit) 75 hour Clinical Practicum in English Language Teaching

M.Ed. Degree Additional Requirements:  9 credits for degree
(choose 3 to 5 electives, depending on concentration)

  •      ED 528 Data Driven Assessment and Instruction

  •      ES 570 Technology and English Learners (required for certification and degree)

  •      ES 580 Advanced EL Assessment, Monitoring and Case Management

  •      ES 585 Development and Administration of Programs for EL's

  •      SE 500 Foundations of Special Education

  •      SE 522 Remedial Techniques in Reading and Writing

  •      SE 526 Content Access for Students with Learning Differences
