DeSales to Host Nursing Lecture on End of Life Care

DeSales University will host Debra Wiegand, PhD, RN, CCRN, CHPN, FAHA, FPCN, FAAN, president-elect of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, for a lecture in end of life care on Wednesday, April 12, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the University Center on DeSales’ main campus in Center Valley. The lecture, presented by the University’s Department of Nursing and Health, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Debra WiegandWeigand (right) is an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Her research interests include withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy, families of the critically ill, palliative care and end-of-life care in people with serious illnesses and bioethical issues related to palliative and end-of-life care.

Wiegand’s program of research focuses on improving end-of-life care provided to families in the critical care setting. She has prospectively conducted qualitative and mixed-methods studies with families of patients with both acute and chronic life-limiting illnesses and injuries that have died after life-sustaining therapies have been withdrawn.

Wiegand has also conducted research with bereaved families. She was honored as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and also as a Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing. Wiegand is currently President-Elect of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.
